$input(Enter nickname please.,e,Enter Nick)

var %in = $?="Enter Nickname Please"

Enter a unicode nickname into these and the output is ???????.

Am I doing something wrong? Is there a way to get this to work? I'm getting "nick not found" errors because the output is a bunch of ?'s.
