Is it a full freeze (ie: you have to CTRL-ALT-DEL or a reboot to get access again) or a long delay? If a delay how long are you waiting? Do you have any scripts that have on connect or on start events?
Does this same thing happen with a barebones install of mIRC (ie: no scripts)?
What version of mIRC? OS? How much ram? What else do you have running at the same time?

Let's handle those questions first, then work on any others if necessary.

First, when it freezes, try hitting control break.

Then try /remote off before connecting.

If you're using IE 7, various problems have been noted and reported, when using IE 7 in conjunction with mIRC. While I haven't heard of this specific problem with that combination, that might be the problem.
If you are using IE 7, then I suggest you downgrade to 6, which doesn't seem to have as many problems when running with mIRC.

If you're not using IE 7, however, then I'm out of ideas, as you've stated that you've tried everything that I would've suggested.
