Routers and Firewalls seem to be a constant source of issues related to a few mIRC-related features, such as IdentD and DCC. This is due to the port restrictions which are either set by default or set by the user.

It is worth noting that the port needed for IdentD is 113. Make sure you type /identd on and read this sticky thread.

The default ports for DCC are 1024-5000. You only really need two ports, preferably in this range, and preferably consecutive (4000-4001 for example). When set in routers/firewalls the ports also need to be set in mIRC options, located (for mIRC 6.14) in ALT+O > Connect > Options > [Advanced]. For help with DCC sending read this sticky thread and for problems receiving, see this page.

It is of course always a good idea to use the Forum Search feature also to look for other threads related to the above issues.

However, if none of that helps, you'll need to fiddle around with router/firewall settings. Often we can't personally help with Firewalls/Routers because some of us don't use either of them (particularly routers) and we can't know about all of them. Obviously, the best advice would be to read the manual or phone the tech support number. But of course another good resource is the manufacturer's website - they often contain huge amounts of information about most issues related to the hardware/software.

And as listing resources is proving to be so useful, here's some support websites for popular companies that produce routers/firewalls:

Routers

LinkSys (Search results for "Port forwarding" in their Knowledge Database)
NetGear Support
Cisco Router support
ZyXel Port Forwarding

Firewalls

Norton Personal Firewall
Zone Alarm
Windows XP Firewall (or further support)
Tiny Personal Firewall Support forum

General

Warp Pipe (General help with port forwarding)
DMZ & Port Forwarding

Hope this helps!

Regards,

Mentality/Chris
