What are you downloading? In my experience, every time someone mentions a .tar file and 'downloading', it's been a movie or some form of warez. mIRC isn't a file trading program, and we don't help with warez here just so you know.

Ok, i personal never seen a movie tar'ed.. and if the game have been tar'ed it comes from a site for linux or unix.. and in 99% of the cases it have been free demos.. so i guess my misstake..

.tar archives originated from UNIX but they're by no means unique to it. These days tarballs and gzipped tarballs are used across multiple platforms.
