What are you downloading? In my experience, every time someone mentions a .tar file and 'downloading', it's been a movie or some form of warez. mIRC isn't a file trading program, and we don't help with warez here just so you know.
*.tar is the format linux/unix using instead off zip.. so if somone talking about *.tar files, i would guess its som type of file ment to be used in linux/unix .. maybe you Mentality ment *.rar ? that format is used to pack movies games..

Ok, i personal never seen a movie tar'ed.. and if the game have been tar'ed it comes from a site for linux or unix.. and in 99% of the cases it have been free demos.. so i guess my misstake..
