What error message are you getting? I would bet on you're receiving the 10053 Software caused connection abort error, which can be for a myriad of reasons. Remember, *** Disconnected is not an error message. The error message is displayed, usually in green, in your status window. It may not be green if you're not using default mIRC (i.e. using a script). See

Those are both stickies at the top of this forum, it's a good idea to look at them and also use the Search feature before posting, as 99% of errors have been dealt with before! When using the Search feature, expand to 'All Forums' and 'All Posts' for best results.
What do you mean by 'downloading'? If you're 'downloading' large files, or more precisely, a large number of large files (movies, mp3s that are around 4-5mb concurrently), then this is most likely why. Did you know mIRC is not a file trading program? It's not built for that kind of use. It would also be quite a strain on your Internet connection, do other programs slow down or completely disconnect? (MSN, AIM, etc.)
