Being 'nuked' will only disconnect you from IRC/Internet, it won't reboot your computer. What you have sounds like some sort of trojan, there are a number of recent trojans that are extremely widespread that tend to reboot your computer.

You need to run 2-3 good virus/trojan scans. See this thread for some resources. You need to use more than just one because no ONE can detect all viruses and trojans. Use two virus scanners and then 2-3 trojan scanners. Also read the whole thread for some good tips on staying safe.

Make sure that you have all available Windows Updates from http://www.windowsupdate.com - You should regularly visit this site for the latest updates. If you use Windows XP, ME or 2K then it's especially important you keep an eye on the updates for the coming weeks, as Microsoft will be releasing a number of updates for extra security. Speaking of security, check out the firewalls section of the previous thread I linked to.

Hope this helps :-)

Regards,

flooding resets your connection.

"Nukes", which are usually used to DoS win3.11-win98 machine. often results in a "blue screen of death" which requires a reboot. win98SE+ have been patched so nuking is rare anymore.

Mentality has some good references here. scan your computer for viruses and check the windows update center.

well yes i am running win XP... and i run my windows updates frequently, i also have Norton SystemWorks with an anti-virus running and ZoneAlarm.... and just so you know the new 6.15 version of mIRC didn’t help... i an using an outside source that you suggested for Trojans and other viruses ... maybe I’m infected without Norton AV knowing... will see, and I’ll keep you posted

From personal experience I have found that on several occasions Norton AntiVirus has not detected a virus/trojan on my system and yet AVG has. As I said, no ONE virus scanner can detect anything even if they are famous and cost a lot of money!

As a side note, to make things easier, perhaps you might want to set Windows XP to automatically update as there are going to be continuous updates over the coming weeks, and soon enough the Service Pack 2 (SP2) release for XP.

It might also be mentioned that amongest XPs' settings there is an option (set by default if i'm not mistaken), whereby the computer is automatically rebooted when a "blue screen" is suppose to appear, and thus doesnt appear.. your computer could simply be crashing for some reason.

i have seen the bluescreen by default on both xp home and xp pro editions. but i know for certain it isnt caused by nukes and the such.

how long does it take for your computer to reboot?
does it happen only when you open mirc? try and boot in safe mode.

i use a very good antivirus called avast. along with an online scanner. Avast.com its one of the viruses scanners listed in one of the stickys.
