If I understand correctly, if you know the users nickname you can just /whois the person by typing /whois Nickname.

Not quite sure what you want!

If you /whois nickname then you can see what channels that person is in. You must their nickname to perform a /whois on them.

If a user is in channels that are set to +s (Secret) or +p (Private) then you cannot see the channel names. There is no way around this unless you're an IRC Operator, in which case, ask your server administrator. If you're a user, you will not be allowed to do this.

Other than that you need to explain what you need a little more for us to understand it smile

You may also need to do a Super Whois to get that information depending on the user's settings.

A super whois is done in the format:

/whois nick nick

Doing /whois <nick> <nick> (or doing a normal whois when you and the target are on the same server) will not make any difference if what you are interested in is channels - or at least won't on any network that I know. It should certainly not show up private or secret channels, as this would defeat the object of those channel modes!

It will sometimes return other extra information (like idle time, logon time etc.) though - again, depending on network/server.
