Hi I'm a total newbie. I just downloaded mIRC, and I'm currently learning how to use it. My question might sound really odd for someone who is more experienced than i am. Sorry about that. Is there a way to search for a channel by topic? (some band, movie, book, etc) Thank you

Do you mean perform the list command on all servers? If so, /scon -a list *bookworms*.

You could check out these websites, they are a good resource to finding channels/networks. http://irc.netsplit.de/http://searchirc.com/

No, /scon -a list *bookworm* should work if you have N server connections.
In Red means server connection(s). In Green means -a which is the switch to signify all servers. In Blue it means listing the channels with our *match text*.
I really don't understand why it wont list on all servers though, maybe you have a different of mIRC (before /scon was added) I'm not sure if it's a feature that's been in mIRC since the birth of the IRC client. But other than that I really an clueless.

You should make that -at1 so that this command is only performed on connected servers.

I think she wants to perform a /list on all (Yes, literally) servers, not just the servers she's connected to.

I'm afraid not, but if you look at searchirc.com you can search servers a lot quicker than you could if you connected to each one and did a /list. And i'm a she My apologies

How could you do a list on a server where you aren't connected to? Doesn't make much sense to me.
Anyway, I gave her those two sites, though seems she might not have seen it.

Indeed, as the /list command, /whois only works if you are actually connected to a server.
Doing a whois means you are querying the server for information about the person you whois'ed, which then sends this information back to your client.
Since this is a server query, you must be connected.
To do a whois:
/whois <nickname> without the < >
If you want to see a person's idle time included in the whois, you'll have to do /whois <nickname> <nickname>
