About a week ago, a regular visitor to my channel kept getting the message "Guests may not speak." I assumed that this was caused by the channel mode having somehow gotten set to "moderated," thus preventing her from talking in the channel.

But that's not it. The channel mode is NOT "moderated," and no one else who visits has this problem. Anyone know of something in her individual settings that could be causing this? Or some other reason? Thanks . . . .

Not knowing the network, i can only give possibilities:

channel modes could be set that only registered and identified to nicks can speak.

the network could have some restrictions

a bot or someone's script could be doing it

the user could be on a ban (where they can enter but not speak)

see if there is a #mIRC on the network you use, or take a look at the networks website to see if you get any clues.

Thanks . . . none of those I think can be it, except perhaps the last one . . . I will have her try the local mIRC help channel. Thanks.

Maybe you should try the help channel for her...if she can't speak in your unmoderated channel, she may not be able to speak in any channel on that server/network. smile

Never compare yourself to others - they're more screwed up than you think.

Good point. I thought of that and went there . . . they had no ideas other than what i already had thought of BUT . . . their policy is that admins will only discuss bans with the person affected -- so if that's the reason they won't talk with me about it anyway. She may have to msg an admin . . . as far as I know She can talk in PM.

Looking at your original post again, it seems as if it's the 'guest' part that is causing the problem. Assuming there's a NickServ on the network, try getting her to register a nick - hopefully that should solve the problem.

Her nick's registered . . . I just checked to be sure and according to nickserv it's still in force. That's the odd thing about this -- the person in question has been coming around for months . . . and never had a problem until about a week ago. Nothing's been changed in the channel modes, etc. . . her ISP and mIRC options as far as I know haven't changed . . . so I'm pretty much stumped. Anything anyone can think of would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

As far as I am aware that is a usermode peculiar to ConferenceRoom and the user mode is +q.

It is not reversable, you must log out then in again to be -q again. If some goose is running around telling people to type /umode +q I'd be banning them from the channel. grin

I should try and find out why it actually exists, there doesn't seem to be much use for it as while opers can view, and in some cases, change usermodes for other users they have access to /shun command which is stealth. Aside from a user being able to block themselves from talking I can't see a use for it.

There's every possibility that it's a self-inflicted way of overcoming an IRC addiction, who knows lol.

q - Be Quiet:
This mode will disable a users ability to talk on the server at all. Once set it can't be unset. Normally this is used in an event client class where you set the initial mode to q so that the user can't speak on the server.

hrm.. says privilege:user but that really doesnt make any sense does it. (i like your idea of its use Watchdog grin )

SnowLeopard: is it just in your channel the user cant speak or is it everywhere?

Thanks . . . I'll contact the person and make sure she checks to see if she's setting her mode to +q by accident . . . perhaps a typo in her PERFORM or remotes . . .
