You can click on addresses, but you should also be able to click on links.

a link

That would save a lot of space, for example in topics. For example:

It would also make the topics look really stupid to clients that don't support it (or to people who strip formatting). The topics would actually take more space but look shorter to a few people. And it would cause you to lose a bit of information when things are displayed.

Excellent idea! Then we can have links that go to such valuable places as Here (Very Cool Site)

No thanks, we already have enough inexperienced users cliking whatever link they can, we don't need links that hide the destination to get more.

If you really want masked links, 2 words: SCRIPT IT!

this can be easily scripted, like many things that appear here.

Hopefully that wasn't directed at me. Maybe my sarcasm wasn't noted, but the link I posted pointed to "http://www.somevirusplace.com/trojans/downloadme.exe" emphasising the security threat. Furthermore, if you continued to read on my second sentance noted my dislikes of the idea.

mIRC is used by all mIRC users (doh) while a script isn't used by them all. See the point here? If something like this feature is suggested, you can *easily* assume a script wouldn't suffice the whole idea.
