Make sure you have Sounds enabled:

ALT+O > Sounds

Check the 'Enable Sounds' box.

In the same area of the Options dialogue, make sure the 'channel' and 'query' boxes are checked under "Beep on:".

If either of the boxes "Use internal beep" or "Use pc speaker" are checked, uncheck them. Make sure there is a sound set on each of the Events in the drop down list in the same Sounds menu.

You might also want to make sure your speakers are turned on and connected properly.

Then in contrary as to what was previously suggested, perhaps you should try checking "Use internal beep" or "Use pc speaker" and then try using the Sounds. You can test if the sound works by clicking the ">" button next to the button where you can select which sound to play.

By the way, make sure the sound on your computer is not muted - go to the taskbar at the bottom of your desktop (it should be at the bottom anyway) and right click on the little speaker. If you have Windows XP expand the icon list first. Once right clicked, click on Open Volume Control. Under 'Play Control' make sure the slider is at the top of the line and that the "Mute all" button is not checked.

I believe use PC speaker means use the speaker that is built into the PC, not seperate ones that you plug into your sound card (although it doesn't actually work for me).

"Use PC speaker" actually is the Windows 'Default beep' sound
Prolly PC speaker if there isn't a soundcard, though I really don't know about that.

Mine uses Default Beep whether I have it checked or not.

From the mIRC helpfile:
Use pc speaker

Makes mIRC play beeps through your pc speaker.

For me:

Without a Default Beep:
[x] Use pc speaker - plays nothing
[ ] Use pc speaker - plays nothing

With a Default Beep:
[x] Use pc speaker - plays default beep
[ ] Use pc speaker - plays default beep

I.e. For me the setting does nothing, nor did it on a laptop I tested on.
