if I've got you right, you can use /who *ip.number* to list all the users on that ip, but there are some limits - people who have set +i won't show up if you're not on the same channel with them, and also some ircds limit the list only to users that are on the same channels with you (no matter if they're +i)

Also how can I FINGER someone who is not on the same channel as me?

I want to check his IDLE time.

/ctcp nickname FINGER is the CTCP way of checking IDLE, however, it's easier and less disturbing to the other user if you just use /whois nickname nickname (Yes, type the nickname twice).

If they are on the same server as you, just a normal /whois should work.

Thanks but I have one more question.

If someone I want to talk to opening a chat session is in a channel that I cannot enter, how can I begin a chat session with him?

Usually I just double-click a name in the name list but I can't in this case.

Thanks.

Type: /query nickname and you can add a message to send if you want.

Another question grin

How can I prevent people from checking my IDLE time or FINGER-ing me or seeing what other channels I am in?

I am already in invisible [+i] mode but I doubt that helped.

You cant as long as they know your exact nickname. Invisible is so that ppl outside the channel you are in cant "see" info on you by using an ip, they must have your nickname to /whois you, and from outside the channel /names will only show those not set invisible. Helps cut down on spam.
