Ok, before I get yelled at, let me say that before I even thought about posting, I read all tha tI could find about this error and utilized the search function, so please do not be upset that I am posting here.

I am at a major university, and am behind both a firewall and a network. I can not connect to any addresses or ips of servers to chat with mIRC. I was wondering if someone could suggest a proxy server, so that I may be able to connect and chat with my friends. For some reason, I am able to use this same computer at home, and connect, but not here. any help would be most appreciated, and if you need any questions asked to help me, feel free to ask.

I am running Windows XP with an ethernet card, connected to a local network, that is behind a firewall. I do not know the host name or user id of the firewall, nor the ip of it.

Ask the head of the IT Department (or whatever they're called - a teacher/professor basically) to help you adjust the settings. Chances are that if you CAN'T chat at the University, then you're not meant to smile - If they refuse to help you so you can use IRC, then it's not allowed.

I'm afraid we do not help with evading the policies of a school/college/university or work place, no matter what the circumstances. Also, you'll find that many networks will not allow connections through open proxies such as HTTP, socks or wingate in order to prevent abuse.

The reason you can chat at home and not at University is most likely due to that firewall, and maybe some sort of filter to block such things as IRC or 'adult entertainment' websites (fear the political correctness!)

Sorry!

Regards,

Mentality/Chris

Don't get me wrong, i'm not trying to evade School policy or anything like that, but they are really hard to get into contact with, and most of them aren't any help at all. I was just wondering if there was a way to find a proxy server, or some other means of connecting it, because it seems like for some reason, that all my ip address requests are directed inside the network. I need to know how to access outside the network and firewall to be able to connect.

We have no way of knowing how the firewall is setup and I doubt you have any tools to configure it.

My first post still applies I'm afraid. Whether you mean to or not, connecting to IRC without 'their' permission is evading school policies. Sorry. If you want to get on IRC you must contact the teacher(s)/professor(s) who deal with the IT sections.

Just to avoid any more well intentioned help by new ppl unfamiliar with our policies, we do not help with evading policies of schools/businesses for reasons that should be obvious.

Regardless of your intent longhorn, it seems the school has blocked access at their firewall. As Mentality politely explained, you will need to contact the admins there regarding this.

That is sad, but unfortunately, it seems to happen here daily.
