Someone has installed mIRC on my pc (not me). Now everytime I start the pc a message box pops up telling me I have an unlicensed copy of mIRC on my pc. So I figre heck, lets just uninstall it. So I go to add/remove progams and try to uninstall mIRC, but I get a dialog box stating that I must stop mIRC before I uninstall it. Next I look for some sort of configuration application I can use to stop mIRC but can find none. I look at my services to see if there are any mIRC services running but I see nothing. I look at my apps with task manager to see if I can shut it down that way but can't find it there, so I check all running processes but don't see it there either. So I browse my file system looking for some sort of mIRC.exe thinking that this file might be buried somewhere. Nothing was found on my filesystem. So, how do I shut down this friggin thing sow I can uninstall it?

thanks

mIRC doesn't pop up a box when you start your computer. Ever. It only nags about unregistered copies when you actually start the program.

If that box is popping up then that must mean that mIRC is starting up when you start Windows, and then hiding itself, but failing to hide the About dialogue. The most likely explanation for this (but certainly not the only one) is that you're infected with some sort of virus, and most probably trying to load a GTbot (See this website).

SwatIT is generally considered one of the best programs for trojan and GTbot removal. Otherwise, you can search Google for "free online virus scans".

Whatever you do, unless you're experienced with computers, do not go killing off processes that you don't understand, get an anti-virus to do it for you if it's necessary. That way, the likelihood of damage being done to your computer is minimal.

Good luck!
