When I use mIRC 6.x on Windows XP, I randomly disconnect with that "Software cause connection abort" error. It happens anywhere between every 10 minutes and every 10 hours, but on average I'd say there's about 4 hours in between each disconnect.

The problem does not happen on Windows 98 with version 6.x, and the problem does not happen on Windows XP if I use version 5.x. Only on XP with 6.x.

If anyone can shed some light on what causes this, that'd be great.

Thank you for the reference.

I was hoping, though, for an explanation of why the problem occurs only in mIRC version 6, and not version 5. One would think that if it were a problem with winsock or the system itself, it would happen with either version. If there is some simple misconfiguration I can change that prevents version 6 from working properly, that'd be great.

Just a note - I've tried this on various other computers as well, and asked a few friends about theirs. Every system I've tried that runs mIRC 6 on Windows XP Pro has the same problem, as do all of my friends who run Windows XP Pro (I have not tried Windows XP Home).

I dont have a why for you, but i can tell you i know some ppl using XP pro who say they only get that happening when they use the firewall and on certain servers.

Thank you. It looks like that was the only commonality each system with this problem had - the XP firewall. After disabling the XP firewall, the disconnects with that error seem to have stopped (I've been connected ever since you posted that, with no problems).

I only ever had that problem with mIRC 6.03 and XP Home, even with the XP firewall disabled. I've since uninstalled XP (too many other conflicts) and gone back to WinME (crap, but still better than XP, lol). I haven't had errorr 10053 since smile

I think Win98SE is better than WinME... That's my practice @ work.
However with WinXP I never had any problems...

Use original drivers & latest Service packs to prevent problems.
