I'm new to this so please bare with me it's only my second day using MIRC, I just have one question for you guys, while downloading a large file I get disconnected after a while, i'm not sure how long it runs for cause I either leave the room or go to work and by the time I come back it stopped downloading. I'm still connected to the server or room whatever you want to call it, it's just that the download has stopped. It's no problem resuming from where I left off it's just a pain cause while I'm at work I could be downloading this file, what gives? is it something I'm doing wrong or is that just the way it is? the file is 1.5 GB and I got 9% in 2 days so you can see my frustration. I run windows XP with a cable modem in case you need to know this. Are there settings somewhere that stop a download after a period of time? Thanx for all your help and I did search the forums but found nothing on this topic.

See that's one of the problems here, if you ask a question pertaining to file transfer, registering mIRC, socket bots, mass commands (just to name a few), many here assume malicious and/or illegal intent .. it's sad really. And I'm willing to bet that the majority of the preachers on this message board have at least a few illegal mp3's.

You gotta admit that someone requesting assistance in downloading a 1.5 gig file is a tad suspicious smile

The only thing I can see a file being that big for is (i guess as its been proven) photo albums, as well as whole DVD images..

The reason is simple: the amount of file transfers involving uncopyrighted material is marginal compared to the stuff that is copyrighted, so odds are hugely in favor of someone referring to illegal files...

That still doesn't mean that everyone is transferring illegal files .. and I think it's crap that you people assume so just because someone asks a question about file transferring.

General reply to the holier than thou club:
Innocent until proven guilty. In the meantime, help if you can, or you can butt the hell out if you're just going to preach or can't help.

Without knowing more, i can only guess and suggest you see this thread

Since you are still connected to the network, its possible the person on the other end had the problem i just mentioned. Another possibility is that one of you has some limitation set by your provider.

I hope you can still breathe if you don't post.

General reply:

I agree with r0ck0, we're not officially entitled to assume intentions and/or judge reasons of an user who asks for help with something that can be dangerous. At least, not here, which is related to mIRC. Since mIRC offers features that one could abuse, it's easy to find people abusing them, but not all of them do that.
Plus, we can't stop who does by hardening help. If people want help to end up abusing, they'll simply get it from the right people (the ones who already abuse) so it's really useless to harden up anything and it's also unfriendly.

That said, not helping this user is your decision and that's fine; if you think nobody should help this user, that's your opinion and that's fine. However, AFAIK, these are *not* part of an official behaviour here. Therefore, discussing about this issue here becomes off-topic, boring and useless, giving room to silly arguements, which are *always* bad.
Oops, this means I'm being off-topic, boring, useless and giving room to a silly arguement. And that's very true, but I wanted to say what I think about this once. I'm done. Back to the subject that matters..

Hunter98:

Are you sure this only happens with mIRC? No other program? Couldn't it be any ISP's temporary problem or something like that?

Perhaps it isnt great to assume, but the odds tend to be in favor of ppl doing illegal file transfers so its hardly surprising many ppl leap to that conclusion. In this case the size of the file in question no doubt contributed to that conclusion. IMO, Deku wasnt preaching or being rude, but directed the poster to a thread in the event it applied. If it didnt, all Hunter had to do was explain, which he did.

However, be that as it may, refusing to help with illegal filesharing and explaining the reasons why is hardly "preaching". There's no need to be rude to ppl just because you dont agree with their opinions/replies or the policies of this forum.

" help if you can, or you can butt the hell out if you're just going to preach or can't help. "
yet you preach and didnt offer any assistance to the original poster.... cant have it both ways.

Tell the sender of the file to erect an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) Server for you to download the 1.5 Gig file from.

FTP is an especially effecient protocol for the sending and receiving of files over the internet.
mIRC's DCC protocol is... not. FTP transfers are usually 1/3rd faster and is the ideal option for large files. Most FTP clients (www.flashfxp.com) allow you to queue multiple files, and even entire directories for download. If the download is interrupted, these clients will automaticly reconnect and resume the download. ... mIRC will not.

Hope this solves your predicament.
