Get a virus scanner (Norton is good). Also don't download files if you aren't absolutely sure what they are, even if it is your friend sending you something, if it can be downloaded from an official site download it from there instead.

No virus scanner can detect everything, but if you do the above then the odds of you getting one are very low.

I really agree with Collective. Download here. If you don't download anything from other users, you really are safe on IRC now-a-days. I am far more worried about email virus's and web page virus' than I am about anything on IRC.

I use McAfee's Virus Scan On line and I love it. Auto-updates itself and everything smile

Another good free virus scanner is an online one called Housecall. You might also consider getting a free firewall called Zone Alarm smile

Never compare yourself to others - they're more screwed up than you think.

I personally use an anti-virus program that has actually tracked viruses that norton and mcaffee haven't caught and to my surprise it was freeware...i found it at www.thefreesite.com (sorry moderators for the spam) its called The AVG Anti-Virus it updates itself like norton does i dont know how you feel about running freeware but it hasnt failed me yet. Also like someone said, try running ZoneAlarm on top of that...I hope this was useful information and again i apologize for the spamming

Sometimes hard to draw a line between spam and useful urls.
I've heard of that website, and it appears to be safe to click on, but as always, its up to the individual to figure out if any software they download is safe to use.
