You say "Router for network only" so I guess you mean that your ADSL modem is not plugged into it?

Sounds to me like a problem with DNS, resolving the hostnames.

Try from command prompt: ping yahoo.com
See if you get any response.

What message(s)/error(s) do u actually get when trying to connect to FTPs/Servers?

If DSL comes into the house, and plugs right into router, you have to forward the ports. Do a search of this forum for your router make to see what advice has been offered.

Router is out of the picture... connection does not run through it... works when router is off/ unplugged.

I am just not clear on your set up, sorry frown DSL comes into your house, the Cat5 wire goes from the wall, into "________" What?

You say ident works and ftp access works when the router is 'off' or unplugged" ?

You can connect to mIRC (although unidented), but you cannot ping an address or connect via FTP client to another address. Something withiin your set up is stopping the latter two things. This isn't a mIRC problem.

I asked about the router because in two of your posts you mention it. There is software that installs with a router and that software has a firewall or type of firewall. You might to look in that direction.

smile It's possible someone might read this and immediately spot your problem. I have limited 'networking' experience, in fact only my own personal experience smile

But trouble shooting is something you, yourself, can do to nail down the exact cause of the inability to connect to outside sites. My guess is router software isn't set to allow in/out travel to the net, but somehow mIRC's connection ports are open.

I have no experience with a router between machines, but not sharing the Internet service. My DSL cable comes into my home, goes into my router, then my 4 pc's connect into my router. #1 pc is 'main' & also where the software is located. I must use the software to 'allow' ports in/out and also to give access for the other machines to use the internet.

If you can ping any outside IP then you have access to the outside world. Not all IP's are pingable even though you can connect to them.

I have 6 machines on my network (at the moment, though about to retire a couple of them) for various things. I have WWW, IRC, FTP, MS Exchange all experimental stuff and all reachable from the 'Net. If you ping my IP you won't get a reply though. Maybe there's no real advantage to it but I do like it that way.

You say you don't use the router for ADSL... Do you still connect with just the one machine or do you try to connect several using one machine as a gateway/hub? If you do network probably best to use the router as these are specifically designed for this. ADSL is weird and can take time to play around with if you use a PC as a gateway. You'll get it going but sometimes you have to alter what is known as MTU settings. This can be done in the System Registry though only go here if you know exactly what you are doing. If you stuff up registry settings it may render Windows useless. See this site for more details http://ozcableguy.com/

The standard MTU settings can 'choke' the bandwidth in the LAN PC's. mIRC will sometimes connect whereas trying to browse websites can be all but impossible. Cable and dialup arn't affected as ADSL is.

If you are just using one machine I'd be making sure the modem is okay. I recently had to replace mine as it'd been on for the last two years and done a splendid job. Nothing lasts forever though and broadband modems are not always resilient objects.

I'm with you now. I have the same problem though it's of no particular concern to me. I'm on Efnet as we speak (just having a look around) and I have that *dirty* ~ next to my user ID. The CR powered network I call home doesn't require Ident server to run and this is why I never worry about it. It sure is a pain in the khyber if you like a server that strictly requires it though. Especially those that don't allow capital letters and all this other nonsense.

I'm using XP with no firewall, no router, just a plain jane dialup connection as I am not currently at home. I do know at times a server will simply just not pick up your Ident even though it would normally be able to look for it. You can't force a server to accept it, again a pain in the khyber.

[08:42] -iglo.ircrealm.net- *** No identd response; username prefixed with ~
Do you remove the ~ from the front of your username and then next time you connect it's back? Have you tried one of the stand-alone identd thingies? Maybe it's something that simple crazy

Never compare yourself to others - they're more screwed up than you think.

Identing in mIRC isn't his 'only' problem. I too, currently, run unidented in mIRC... He also cannot ftp or ping, and I believe he means to anything. Perhaps your ISP's ident server is down? Have you checked with them?
