Is it possible to keep the same nick though I may not be at the computer.

I have been keeping my nick for over a couple of years now, then have had problems recently because someone is using the same nick as me.

Any thoughts? confused

Does your server run nickname registration services? If so then just register your name. This will stop other people from using it to impersonate you. If the server has no registration then technically you do not own the nick. You would need to run a bot which uses your nick when you arn't there though this may be against the rules on some networks.

Most servers have services installed like NickServ where if you register with them and set a password, then you "own" the nickname. Try typing /nickserv register help or /msg nickserv register help in the status window and see if you network has services. If that does not work, you may try the #help or #Oper channels and ask for assistance there.

Some networks do not have services however, in which case the only chance you have is keeping your connection 24/7 to "Reserve" your name.
