how the evaluation of the variable /sockread works ?
it seems that it doesn't work like /set, for example:
/sockread %a $+ b
/set %a $+ b 1

With a response like that you encourage me to answer you promptly! Oh wait, no you don't, you encourage me to keep the answer to myself. Being ungrateful isn't the best way to get people to help you.

"Thanks for your help, but thats not what I meant. What I want to know is, why does it evaluate differently than /set, not how do I make it work like /set"

See how thats different from

"did I ask 'how to do it'"?

When you want people to provide you help, you should try and be polite to them.

Freedom of speech is being able to be rude to anyone; but it comes with a burden. You have to stand there and listen to anyone who wants to be rude back. Where's my poking stick?

There's no such thing as freedom of speech. Wherever we all go there will be things that we shouldn't say, for whatever reason, whether it be due to a law or just simply good manners.

Just what I was waiting for. *POKE WITH THE POKING STICK*

Morning Watchdog, what are you doing up at this hour?

There is freedom of speech in public, but setting foot anywhere thats owned privately and your rights are kaput - or so it seems sometimes.... *COUGHHACKPOINTINGOFACCUSINGFINGERSATCERTAINSERVERS*

But don't mind me... :P
*pokes the original poster for being rude*

Ettiquite (me unglish good yes). PAH!
Manners were made to be trampled on. Most people end up so trapped in their own little world of politeness that its quite scary - this is why its so hard to talk to women, becasue we men GENERALLY have a paranoid fear we will say something impolite (which makes us look stupid).

I say cast off the shackles of saying "pass the butter _please_" and just be cranky, stubborn and irate all day every day!

Morning Watchdog, what are you doing up at this hour?

I'm at work and all is well, so I am on the net and eating lunch. Only thing that annoys me at the moment is that I have to work at night in 0° and sleep when the temperature is a nice warm 23°, yes 23, which is a record for July here.

Anyway, no harm in being well mannered to the ladies. A bit of old fashioned courtesy never did a bloke any harm and if they are good looking I will even hold the door open for them at David Jones or press the buttons for them in the lift. grin

You think so? If someone were to talk into a PUBLIC school and say "I have a bomb" you can rest assured that person will soon be jailed, and rightfully so.

Someone just said "Freedom of speech is ", among other things, "being able to be rude to anyone; but it comes with a burden." I would only disagree with CloCkWeRX' choice of burdens.

The burden is the consequences you generate by your statements, be they what you intended or wanted .. or not.

If, for example, you're chatting up some shiela and share your innermost emotions and feelings, or your comments are nurturing, (or whatever it is you're supposed to say to women to get them where you most want them - no man has ever figured that out, John Gray being probably the sole exception), the results might be pleasing indeed, all round. Conversely, if you say something completely rude and highly inappropriate, the consequence might be that you get a drink in your face.

If, for example, you enter a public place and say "I have several million <insert local currency here> and I'm giving it all away," you'll immediately become extremely popular. Conversely, if you're in ANY public place and you say "I have a bomb that I plan to explode here as soon as I find the switch," the consequence might end up with jail (and rightly so).

If, for example, you come into my home and (noticing that my taste(?) in interior decoration harkens back to a kind of Paleolithic Stone-age meets minimalistic Danish Modern) and offer to complete re-do my entire home for free, you would likely be welcomed with open arms. Conversely, if you come into my house and threaten my family, the consequence will quite likely be death on the spot. (I don't believe in fighting, but I do believe in killing: if it's not worth killing over, then it's not worth fighting over.)

However, contrary to what Watchdog has stated above, there certainly IS freedom of speech; you can choose to speak, or not to speak, based on your knowledge of the consequences. The choice is yours and you are completely free (even in a Communist/Fascist state) to express what you like.

Well you seem to be talking "freedom of speech" in a more philosophical aspect, more along the lines of you always have the freedom to think no matter what opression you endure. I, and I thought the others, were talking more in a legal sense, meaning speech you're not going to end up in jail for, which is what I was referring to in my post.
