When did mIRC start requiring registration?

mIRC.com
Quote:

mIRC is shareware, which means that you can download mIRC and try it out freely for 30 days to evaluate it. If during, or at the end of, the evaluation period you decide that you would like to continue using mIRC, you must register your copy.

Since it was first released as far as I know.

Are you sure about that? I thought the very first version was freeware?

It's possible, I didn't actually use mIRC until about v5.3, but either way mIRC has been shareware for a long time. From the tone of the thread it seemed to me like the poster had suddenly discovered that mIRC was shareware and thought it was some recent thing.

mIRC reincarnated as shareware! After working on mIRC for over 18 months Khaled decided to release this new version of mIRC as shareware. This will allow him to go on developping and supporting mIRC with the same spirit and enthousiasm as he did over the past. Your registration of mIRC will guarantee the existance of mIRC's www pages with help, news and hints and support further development of mIRC, its help files and the FAQ. :-)

Yes, shame on you Khaled! Earning a living, what is the matter with you?
</sarcasm>

Since when did providing goods and/or services in exchange for money become a practice that is to be shunned? Oh and by the way, "taking money" usually means stealing, i.e. you give him your money, he gives you nothing in return. However, he is giving you something in return, a licensed copy of mIRC. This isn't called "taking money" it's called "charging a fee".

Then you got to ask yourself this question. Is mIRC worth 20 bucks? Well, in my opinion, I think it's worth more, but I want to know what other mIRC users think.

It's absolutely worth $20. I think I have been registered ever since registration was required. According to the old news (thanks watchdog) that was in July of 1996. For $20 I have been using mIRC for 7 years and getting free updates. I'd call that a pretty damn good bargain.

Honestly I think Khaled made a mistake making it a one time $20 fee. I'd have paid another $20 to upgrade from 5.x to 6.x. smirk

Of course it's worth $20 (about 13.00). What other great, customisable software could you buy for that? And with free updates? Yes, there are other free IRC clients - but let's face it, mIRC leaves them standing. grin

Never compare yourself to others - they're more screwed up than you think.

you've managed to outdo yourself phoenix... what diff does it make how much $20 is in pounds or yen or anyotherdangcurrency at the current/past exchange rate. If your comment had been regarding a comparison of what it takes to earn the equivalent of $20 in various countries it would have had some relevance.

Moving on even tho this subject has been beaten to death many times over: IMO, mIRC is not only well worth the amount charged, but would be a bargain to me at 10 times the price for all it has added to my life. good grief, at $20, if you use mIRC for 5 years, 2 hours a day, it costs you like half a cent an hour, AND you get all upgrades. If you made $5/hour, you'd earn that in what, like a second? (if my math is wrong, i dont care, its still cheap, you get the point, so put down your calculators ) Khaled even allows ppl who cant afford it to pay less...how many others do that or have one charge entitle you to all upgrades? As i've said before, $20 was a lot of money to me in 96 and still is, as it is to many ppl. Some of us have/had a harder time getting that amount, but when you consider what you get for it (both tangible and otherwise), its money well spent and Khaled deserves every cent he gets for all his hard work.

Rather than repeated threads here/questions in mIRC channels of "is it worth the price", i'd like to see ppl asking themselves "what has mIRC added to my life". (note to phoenix: before you post another irrelevant post, yes i know some other chat client may have done the same, but i dont use another one, i use mIRC so i dont care to get into some esoteric question regarding what path takes you where)

Okay I had to laugh at Parabrat's " Id pay for it if it were 10 times the price thing"< cos that's just a wee bit over the top for us working class heros smile

i paid 15 because i couldnt be bothered to convert it grin
i doubt that would be much less,if not more than $20 ;\
also i just said that because for all i know $20 could be a lot more than that in 's i dont care about that currency, because i dont live there, ive been to america before but my aunt handled my money for me.

hrm. good point. I made that comment from the standpoint of already knowing how great mIRC is and how it has added to my life and a 30 day trial prolly wouldnt have shown me that. Honestly, not knowing what i do now, if when first hearing of mIRC i saw it was $200 i would prolly have gulped and gone in search of something i could afford. Which is not to say mIRC isnt worth tons more, i just wouldnt have known it and couldnt have afforded it. Course, even at that price after all the years and hours i've used it, the cost per hour would still be cheap. Trust me, paramedics are grossly unpaid on the whole (altho some services did have a brief burst of conscience after 9-11, mostly we could work for mcdonalds and make more money). So, i shall rephrase: Thank you Khaled from all of us underpaid working class ppl for keeping the cost of mIRC at an affordable level even tho we all know its worth is priceless.

I'll be honest and say, I've been using mIRC for about 1.5 years, and I still haven't registered frown *Slaps wrists* - However, that's only because I don't have the funds...I mean, technically speaking I do, but the money has to go to other things in order for me to survive :P (mIRC doesn't feed, water and cloth me unfortunately!)

However, you good little preachers have converted me! As soon as I have the funds, which should be fairly soon, I think I just might register :P

Happy chattin'

Regards,

Mentality/Chris
