Can mirc use the winamp mp4 encoder any way at all and is there any possibility of making mirc mp4 compatible?
It would not take much to add mp4 decoder

Question: how exactly do you know it wouldn't be difficult to add this to mIRC?
And why exactly is this useful? I've yet to see anyone actually using this format to distribute music files.

"Do you know how mirc plays mp3 its hook to ms mp3 decoder well then all mirc needs is hook to a ms mp4 decoder which will be resident in Windows Longhorn"
I'm not completely writing off this thought. But, I don't think they're gonna go for it unless demand for it grows

Well Longhorn, last I checked, isn't planned for release until late 2004 early 2005. So why should mIRC worry about utilizing a technology that doesn't even exist yet?

Good call. Somethings are easy and others not so easy.
And why exactly is this useful? I've yet to see anyone actually using this format to distribute music files.
Bad call. "Not in use" just means that no-one supports a given thing yet. It doesn't have any bearing on future possibilities though.

Well my point is (assuming for a moment that mIRC doesn't simply use WM and instead needed to include the decoding libraries) would you want an increase in size of mIRC by a considerable amount for the ability to play... all 4 .mp4 files? Plus from what I've read about mp4, most manufacturers are only seeing the potential for MPEG-4 as a video format, not for music. Everything I've read basically says expect to see mp3s for many many years to come.
But seeing as how mIRC does use WM, that means WM must support mpeg-4, which at the moment it doesn't. And as the poster said, Windows Longhorn will add support, but Longhorn doesn't exist yet.

The reason you can't play video files like you can play audio files is (I would imagine) simply because sound has relevance to mIRC, whereas video really doesn't. You might want a sound to play when a certain event happens in IRC, either because you're not at the computer so you'd like to alerted, or simply for aesthetic reasons. Obviously a video won't help alert you if you're not looking at the monitor, and as far as aesthetic reasons go you can't be on active on IRC and watching a video at the same time, so what's the point?
Spelling mistakes, grammatical errors, and stupid comments are intentional.

exactly .... someone realizing mirc isnt a music jukebox ....... when trying to play anything like sounds videos or whatever mirc by defualt passes this request along to your defualt media player ..... si in essance if i want to play a sound in irc (ok i know i said IN irc) i type /sound blah blah blah ..... mirc passes this sound request along to windows to handle ........ so really your limits on hearing these files your wanting to hear ppl are limits from your OS not from mirc......
