Does anyone have any reccomendations as to programs which people can use to design their own fontstyles?

The idea which was raised to me last week by this kid I know is that if we were able to design our own fontstyles, it would become possible to put smilies on a channel window without any fancy graphics/mdx styling.

I've only seen one person who has actually gone ahead with this idea. I dread his smilies. I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas where to start.

Presume that I would be willing to purchase sofware legally if necessary. (I'll bet some of you are surprised there are still people who DO things legally nowadays.)

Google is your friend! I searched for "create your own windows font" and I got http://www.high-logic.com/fcp.html, it has a free trial version (doesn't mention whether the "save" feature is disabled in the trial version) and $50 to buy, I didn't download it but just from the screenshots they have it looks pretty nice. I also found http://www.fontsnthings.com/tools/creation.html which lists several software packages, they might have some free ones but I didn't check them all out. Also it seems most of them allow you to load a .bmp for the particular character (probably would make it easier since you want to use smileys), so what might be the easiest is to create the smiley in an image editor (I'd recommend GIMP www.gimp.org/win32, which has 90% of the power of Photoshop, but 0% of the cost, ideal for someone who doesn't like to use warez but also realizes he can't afford everything smile) Then import that .bmp into the font editor.

Hope that helps.

I'm not too terribly surprised, but was amazed a little bit. Nice to know that some people do support software companies, and would like to see them stay around longer--rather than go bankrupt from the "Warez kiddies"

That wouldn't be my smiles, would it? Oh no!
If it is, I did mention "Font creator 4". It was an ugly, quick script just to demonstrate it could be done. If you do it, email me some screen shots someday...

If its not my smilies, I'm fair sure I came up with the idea (at least on these boards), and I demand my royalty of ego patting.

Well before he gives credit to you he should give it to microsoft. Seeing as how Wingdings has smileys for smile :| and frown and how wingdings has been around since as long as I can remember (at least Win 3.1), I think they came up with the idea before you did smile

edit:
Also forgot, Unicode defines chars for smile and frown

Clock, its very possible you're the person whose smiles I've seen. If I'm not mistaken, I saw the one I referred to on mIRCscripts.org. I could be wrong.

I think its a very good idea. A few months ago I had some wacky thought that I might be able to reproduce a channel window in full, with the sole purpose of adding smilies and small little effects like that to the channel. Having fontstyles do all the work would certainly cut out all of the work. I also think of fontstyles as something that people can't rip as easily as you can script code. So thats good.

I think I'm gonna look into this.

Oh! My ego! Ow!

Yes, MS probably was one of the many who pioneered the "lets forget text standards" frontier. Hurrah.

I guess I'm just a small fish in a big stream. *Sigh*. Its sad to see how I conform in my nonconformance
