When joining around 300-400 channels in one server, new channels start opening with "error opening log file #channelname". When this happens, the mIRC client starts to act oddly, hanging and showing extra scroll bars in the middle of chat windows at times. After this starts happening, closing the mIRC client and reopening makes the software work properly again.

Not that I intend to try to re-create this problem by joining that many, but is the issue affected by doing a mass-join, or does it happen even if you only join them spaced apart? Does the logging actually fail, or does it log those channels in spite of the error?

Since this kind of error could be related to an operating system, it helps to know which you're using.

Also, how many files are in your logging folder:

//echo -a $findfile($logdir,*,0)

Thanks for your bug report. This is a known limitation and the most common reason for this is that Windows has run out of memory/handles/etc. and mIRC is no longer able to allocate memory. There is little mIRC can do about this. In general, mIRC will try to report an error once this happens, however even that might fail in a low memory situation. Even trying to exit normally could cause a memory error.
