ctrl + F won't bring up the find window ctrl + b won't bring up the color mode window
This was first with mirc7.32. Then I decided to downgrade and see if it works with a older version. So I downgraded to 7.29. And it still doesn't work. I can't figure it out. I googled this problem, but google doesn't bring up any results on this issue. I could use version 6.21 or 6.3, but I want to use the upgraded version.
Don't know if this matters. I'm also using Windows XP Service Pack 3.
I did modify the installation a bit. I don't want a app data folder in my user folder, so I moved all the stuff from app data folder to my mirc install. I want all information in the same folder, period.
And before you ask, I did use mIRC v6.3 that way, and that successfully works, it brings up the find window and the bold window. I have no idea what the problem is. Or where do I even begin troubleshooting the problem. Log files? Error Logs? Maybe I can fix it by putting something in the alias script? My only option is at this point is to contact the creators of this program. So, please help me if you can. Thank you.
update: ctrl + F seems to work in log files. ctrl + b still doesn't work.
and alt + b doesn't work either.

update:
I meant ctrl + k for color.
Anyways, some one wrote a script for me. To bring up a search window, when I press F12. Well, that doesn't work either when I press F12. But when I do /textfind which is also a alias. That works. It seems shortcut keys don't work. No matter what they are.
I tried basically 7 versions next. 7.1 - 7.32, choosing the portable device option as install. No shortcut keys work. Still doesn't work on those versions.
Now what I did was login into my Windows 7 partition. And it works in Windows 7.
This must be a Windows XP glitch with versions 7.1 - 7.32. But to confirm that, does anyone have this problem with Mirc versions 7.1 - 7.32 with Windows XP?

Unfortunately I have not been able to reproduce this issue on Windows XP or Windows 7. If you install a clean copy of mIRC in a new, empty folder in your documents folders using the "portable" option in the installer and test again with this copy, do you still see the same issue?

It works, you were right. It was the install directory. I copied and pasted my mirc files into a renamed folder, and everything works as normal.

I'm updating this thread, that I made a long time ago. Just in case anyone every came across it on google.com with the same problem.
For some reason, after some time. The problem reoccurred again. And then I just ignored it and didn't really care
But then when I turned my firewall off. And ran it, the short cut keys worked.
I figured out what the real problem was. I was blocking "global hook mirc.exe" with my firewall every time it starts up. Because I'm paranoid with my computer and just block random things I find suspicious. And coincidentally enough. The older versions don't use "global hook mirc.exe", so that's why it would work there. And then the shortcut keys would work with the newer versions now.
Is there a way to make shortcut keys still work while still blocking this? Because I do worry about key logging and stuff. Not sure what this is, and why older versions don't have it.
Is this a normal operation? Does it do it on fresh reinstall? I'm just not sure.
Full message is this: Defense alert
"mirc.exe is trying to install global hook mirc.exe"
"A global hook is a windows feature which allows application such as media players, keyboard enhancement programs etc, to inject executable files (e.g. dll files) into other applications for various purposes. But this is also commonly exploited by malware programs for keylogging, screen capturing or controlling legitmate applications"

That's weird that mIRC would be using a global hook to monitor accelerator (shortcut) keys in the application. Maybe Khaled can elaborate on what changed in this area? Does mIRC use WH_KEYBOARD or WH_KEYBOARD_LL for accelerators now? Why not CreateAcceleratorTable or at least RegisterHotKey?
Well. At least I won lunch. Good philosophy, see good in bad, I like!

I'm seeing different versions trying to install global hook. mIRC v6.21 mIRC v6.16 I'm just wondering, what global hook is. Anyway to find out old versions that were legit from mirc.com, to see if those exe's match the ones in my other versions of mIRC? For mIRC v6.21 and mIRC v6.16? Just want to make sure it's not a modified version. Of course I can find the older version from old apps. But I would much prefer to download mirc stuff from mirc.com.

If you must use an older version of mIRC, you should not under any circumstances use any version of mIRC older than mIRC v6.35. mIRC v6.35 includes security updates that fix remote exploits existing in older versions of mIRC. You can download mIRC v6.35 through the download page on the mIRC website.
It is perfectly normal for mIRC to use hooks as it needs them to process a variety of low level keyboard and mouse inputs to mIRC windows and dialogs across different versions of Windows. However, mIRC only uses local, thread-specific hooks, not global hooks. If your firewall is reporting a global hook, it may be that it is not distinguishing between a global and local hook, in which case you would need to ask the developers of the firewall about the message.

Thanks Khaled. BTW, are Ctrl+M and Ctrl+J supposed to behave like Enter? Is this a Windows 7 thing (^M is 13, ^J is 10)? I encountered this by accidentally hitting Ctrl+J when attempting a series of Ctrl+K colors. It was a rather awkward mistype. I believe mIRC should ignore these particular sequences. And, would you be able to add Shift+Enter to create a new line in a multi-line or automatic editbox? This is common behavior on the web, eg, Facebook posts. There is currently no means to create multiple lines unless you paste them. (//clipboard $crlf followed by Ctrl+V) ((Someone corrected me saying Alt+Enter works in mIRC. I'm used to Shift+Enter. Not sure which is correct.)) And would it be possible to allow the same with /editbox ? Edit: I found that Shift+Enter is standard in Windows and Linux, while Alt+Enter is only used by Mac OS. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Table_of_keyboard_shortcuts#Text_formatting
