Hello,

I recently began using SSL on the DALnet network,
using the built-in SSL functionality of mIRC.

One of the issues I noticed immediately was that
my server ping times had doubled when using SSL:

Without SSL:

[punch.va.us.dal.net PING reply]: 0.031 secs
[punch.va.us.dal.net PING reply]: 0.032 secs
[punch.va.us.dal.net PING reply]: 0.032 secs
[punch.va.us.dal.net PING reply]: 0.031 secs

With SSL:

[punch.va.us.dal.net PING reply]: 0.063 secs
[punch.va.us.dal.net PING reply]: 0.063 secs
[punch.va.us.dal.net PING reply]: 0.062 secs
[punch.va.us.dal.net PING reply]: 0.063 secs

Naturally, nothing good comes without some cost,
and I expect that these are normal processing
delays associated with the SSL encapsulation
overhead.

Does this amount of additional latency sound
about right? I'm curious to know what others have
been seeing in this area, and is it about the
same regardless of the network you are operating
on?

Please bear in mind that I'm not complaining about
the latency involved.. I'm merely curious as a result
of my interest in networks and SSL in general.

My dlls are OpenSSL v 1.0.0e, and my mIRC version is
7.22.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Regards.

Thomas
