Hello smile

In attempting to perform the update(722) to my registered copy of mIRC, I got this message from Windows(Vista 32): "You do not appear to have permission to install mIRC in folder C:\Program Files\mIRC please select another folder". First I re-downloaded the update and tried again (same result). Second, I thought I would try uninstalling and re-installing my current version, and then would try the update again. But now I have the same message with my current version of mIRC. I would consider an alternate folder to install to, though I suspect I would lose settings, etc... And I'm figuring there is something else wrong that I should address, as it seems odd that I cannot access the mIRC folder. Suggestions?

Windows Vista and Windows 7 protect the Program Files folder from modification. Installing *should* work fine, but updating may or may not depending on the software. You can disabled UAC from your control panel temporarily until after you update, or you can just move everything to a folder other than in Program Files. For example, c:\mirc\ . In Windows Vista, go to Users in the control panel and you can turn it on and off from there. It may require restarting your computer.

If you move your entire current mIRC folder to a new location and then install the update, you should not lose any settings. Settings on newer versions are stored in your AppData folder, so wouldn't be lost anyhow, but it's possible you still have settings in your install folder depending on what version(s) you have used. It's safer just to move the whole folder to guarantee that you won't lose your settings.

As mentioned in the previous post, the UAC feature in Vista/7 may be causing this, however the mIRC installer should normally receive the correct permissions when it runs, as most installers do, so I am not sure why you are seeing this issue.

One possibility is that you are using anti-virus/firewall software that is actively blocking applications from writing to the mIRC folder. If you disable your anti-virus/firewall software and then try again, does it work?

I ran across the same problem. Someone from the irchelp channel suggested I right click on the installer launch icon and Run as administrator. That let it load. For whatever reason it doesn't install otherwise.
