It's called freedom of speech. I don't think anyone who has posted on any board anywhere hasn't been scrutinised at some stage. BTW, It's spelt behaviour. Just thought I'd throw that in. blush

actually, "behavior" is correct by american english spelling. the queen's own has a tendancy to add unnecessary "u"'s.

No no, it's the americans who have a tendency to knock them out. Long live the Queen!

The thing is, Clockwerx is an Australian, like me, and as such Her Majesty's English is therefore the correct way to speak/spell. Unfortunately today's generation finds it 'cool' to Americanise everything.

At least when the Brittanic clans ripped every other language to form English they respected the source dialects and left the spelling pretty much intact.

Why wouldn't you want to Americanize things?

If we did:

1. There'd be alot of car accidents (We drive on the left side of the road to avoid that)
2. Alot of dictionaries would have to be replaced. (There goes another rainforest)
3. There'd be more displacement of the natural beauty of the English Language.
4. We'd be driving Chevs and Buicks instead of Holdens - BTW Did you know that the next Pontiac GTO is a badge-engineered Aussie made Holden and all order books are full? We did actually bother to make the car left-hand-drive though so don't panic too much.
5. We'd have no real hamburgers. (I can only stand mustard and gherkin so much. Long live beetroot and eggs)
6. We'd be calling chips french fries.
7. We'd be playing footy with a helmet on. (Be real men and play Rugby League/Union)
8. We'd have 500 more channels on the telly but still no improvement in programming.
9. All our banknotes would be the same colour. (How boring)
10. We'd need another 44 states. (Where would they go?)

Still... I'm not one to be a yank-basher. Alot of good things come out of America. Things like:

1. Jack Daniels (A good drop)
2. Wild Turkey (Another good drop)
3. Hoovers
4. Windows XP
5. ConferenceRoom

Nope! US money is getting colorful (note color not colour) as of this year!

I don't know whether to find it amusing that we are discussing a "u" in a post about nitpicking, or wheter to cry silently.

Watchdog if your wondering, I do a lot of typing in MS Word (Too much), and you know what its like with handling australian english.
Also, have you ever heard me speak? People swear I have an american accent.
Its a testament to how stupid people are.

I think maybe I was brought up to act, speak, and more or less BE American, at the behest of TV & Mr Gates.

Anyway, whats wrong with it? Don't you remember our Prime Minister is an honourary Texan?

You can't blame Micro$oft or telly for "be[ing] American"

If I used that excuse then I would walk around talking like Maxwell Smart or Herman Munster.

As for M$ Office, you can modify the dictionary, as I do, from 'Micro$oft Australian English' to 'I'm a Bloody Australian Mate! English'. Takes some time but educating a programme is no different to educating people. Or maybe I own the only copy of Word that doesn't put that squiggly red line under words or phrases like: Dinky Di, G'day, Fairdinkum, Bloke, Sheila, Hard Yakka, Bonza, Cattledog, etc etc etc.

Perhaps I could educate Gatesy in eloquence?

Disclaimer: Any spelling errors I do make anywhere are oversights, no-one's perfect. blush

*wonders if Watchdog has ever worked on a farm, lived in an area with no concrete or been bitten by a snake*

I know how to solve the "where would we put 44 more states" problem. Simply say we are going into a country for preemptive self defense, toss out the government and declare it a new state in the union!

I have actually, a horse stud in Scone, NSW and a cattle station in Tamworth, NSW.

Have I been bitten by a snake? No. I've been attacked seven times by dropbears though.

dropbears?! You mean you forgot the smarties and the vegemite? But... thats... basic Aussie survival!

Damn. I guess that gives you a right to use your stereotypical Aussie colloquialisms (hey, dictionary.com said I got it right first time! I feel special for using a big word!).

For those who don't know what a Dropbear is, it is a close cousin to the Koala. Reports of animal attacks on people aren't that common, not by this animal at least, and it doesn't get much in the way of media attention. Several tourists evey year however, fall victim to it. So next time your in the Australian bush, don't stand under trees for too long, take extra precautions when camping and make sure you are extra alert at night time.
