i am at a colledge and it's most likely firewall protected. i think i only can connect to port 8080 or 13. , so i don't know how to connect to dalnet. i can connect to efnet with port 8080 but i can't download anything. i heard people even download from channels if their is a firewall. if i use proxy then it said "* Firewall: Connection rejected". what can i do to connect dalnet ?my admin wont open a extra port and he wont mind if i download stuff from mirc. what program i can use to see how many port i have open and what are they? plzzzzzz help

I'm assuming you're using networked equipment at your college? The only thing you can do is ask your admin there to change the firewall settings....I doubt they will, though. If they don't want you to access IRC (or any other stuff) there will be a reason for it. grin

Welcome to mIRC tech support. You might not know it, but mIRC is a text chatting software client for IRC. We don't advocate using mIRC as a 'file trading' client, nor do we encourage or teach how to obtain illegally obtained copywrited items.

If the admin at the college says you cannot open additional ports, then you are bound to follow their rules. Many colleges are now actively going after their students who trade/receive illegal files though their servers. Really assess the risks you take with this activity.

I agree with Karen here

In addition to getting yourself into strife with your headmaster you could cause a virus to destroy the entire school network. Remember that some of the best virii are only a few kb's and arn't noticed until they have done irreversible damage to both software, data and hardware. Some schools (here in Australia anyway) do allow IRC but for the life of me I can't understand why. When I went to school we went there to learn lessons not spend library periods on chat.

I dont understand why you just shrug him off, he has a valid question. What's this talk about spreading viruses? He just asked if he can change the port mIRC uses to something else like 8080. I know in my college the only thing they allow me to do is download from the web..and even then its pathetic.

In response to greatman, just use google, you'll find your answer. google is the answer to everything

It's just as well your college looks after your internet security then, don_lapre. Nobody is shrugging anybody off - if the system admin won't open a port then it's for a good reason, and there's nothing anyone here can do about it.
