I run Windows 7 Ultimate on a 2gb RAM 2gb amd processor. I have mirc v6.35. Since I got Windows 7 when I run mirc and I do several downloads, multiple networks and chat rooms are open my irc becomes sluggish and my pc kinda too. This never was a problem before. No matter how much I had open inside mirc it would run like butter. Is it a version problem or win7 prob?

It would require more information to really figure out the problem. mIRC runs fine on Windows 7 (both 32bit and 64bit) and even multiple networks/etc on even just 1GB RAM. I'd suggest starting out by looking at your buffer size. Too large of a buffer will slow things down considerably... especially if you're in many channels.

Alt-O > Other. In the Window Buffer box, you probably should stick to under 5000. Unless absolutely necessary, 1000 is usually plenty and saves a lot of memory if you're in many channels.

Beyond that, you might have a script or DLL loaded that isn't very compatible with Windows 7. There may be any number of things that can also slow things down.

One thing to note. mIRC 6.35 does cause icons on your desktop to flicker if you mouseover channel names. This *may* potentially cause a slow down. Just keep the mouse away from the channel names unless you're planning to click on them and that bug won't be an issue.

I don't do anything differently in win7 then i did in xp pro! I used to run mirc there with loads of channels and multiple downloads & everything ran smoothly. So yeah this will be difficult to figure out since you say Win7 has probably nothing to do with it.

I didn't really mean Win7 has *nothing* to do with it, but it can run just fine under Win7. If it is related to Win7, then it's likely a driver issue or another software program using more memory in Win7 or something like that. Basically something that runs more slowly or not as well on Win7 and is therefore affecting mIRC.

Try the beta and see how it works just as a comparison. However, keep in mind that the beta is slower overall because of unicode. Still, it might work better and is worth checking out.

That's up to you. What that does is sets the number of lines in every window that you can scroll through. Most people really don't need to scroll back 1000 lines. If you keep logs of any important channels then lowering it isn't a big deal. Or, if you just don't care about stuff 1000 lines ago, you can lower it as well. Keep in mind that the setting affects every window, though. If you need that much scrollback for even 1 window, you shouldn't lower it. You can "bypass" that setting in a window by scrolling back a little and leaving it there. Doing so will let the channel accumulate all lines into the buffer until you return and scroll back to the bottom. This can let you keep an entire window's text while you're away so you can scroll back through all of it if you want a lower buffer and don't want to lose a higher buffer while you're away on certain windows.

In the end, it's completely up to you. Whatever works best.

I know there is a minimum amount, but set it to whatever you want as long as it accepts it.
