Yeah and I bet they are spamming the channel with away messages and their music script.

I seem to recall, back when I first registered here, that it was shown that the US Army was using mIRC, based upon similar proof (ie: the picture).

In my opinion, as long as the users paid for their version of mIRC, or are still in the trial period, there's nothing wrong with it.

Yeah, I heard about it years ago as well. Whether they are just chatting on free time or making use of it for military purposes... ask someone who would know rather than believing pictures and rumors. smile

You forgot it's also on the little screen >.<

It's also used among the guys that do the child porn crackdowns (in Australia)

I seem to recall some time ago, someone posted a capture from CSI with mIRC on a machine in the background.

@par0ar: Just to chat? Or for military purposes?

@RoCk: Yeah, I remember that.

I know that IRC was used way back in the early 90s to communicate news, due to regular ways to spread news were not possible... something to do with the cold war, iirc.

As far as I've been educated about IRC, the very history of the internet and IRC are synonamous <mind my spelling> with each other.

The internet originated and evolved around military use. IRC would have been used by the military since the very beginnings of the internet.

But i have to admit that this picture is a steal smile Thanks for sharing with us.

IRC was created by Jarkko Oikarinen in August 1988 to replace a program called MUT (MultiUser Talk) on a BBS called OuluBox in Finland. Oikarinen found inspiration in a chat system known as Bitnet Relay, which operated on the BITNET.

I have a question. Did CSI, and other TV shows that have displayed mIRC ask to do so?

I would imagine only those who wanted bad press would complain. Think about it, if it was made public that company "X" (fill in one of your choice) sued the tv station over showing their software, how big a fallout would the computer would do? Users are fanatical in their beliefs - don't believe me? Do a search for unix/wine, emoticons, (years ago mind you) multiserver support, colors, etc and you'll see what I mean. Frankly, I think of it as free advertising, besides, who said they didnt pay for the copy they use? Are they using it incorrectly? I know, it's all legal semantics, but still, only an idiot would complain about their program being used and shown on tv (unless that use portrays the software in bad light or even incorrectly)
