It might be "oh my god, you stole it from MSN!" but it's actually usefull! Below the "editbox" (where you type...) an small line with the names of people who are currently typing something (in the active channel)

Example:
[here are you typing.. blablablablabblalba]
"Myname, othername, thatname, secondname, thirdname are currently typing..."

Or some other sentences, "Myname, othername, thatname, secondname and thirdname are typing a message..."

Could this be a future function?

This is not possible without rewriting the IRC protocol, which is not going to happen.

You could also implement it so each client would send a message to the channel/query they are currently typing in, informing other mIRC clients this means "started typing". However, all other non-mIRC IRC clients would not interpret this as such and would just see spam. So unless ALL clients implement it (and therefore sort of becomes part of the protocol), it won't be doable.

Not to mention the fact that you could have a lot of names in that line, also would it just be for the active channel, all joined channels on the network, or all joined channels on all connected networks?

Imagine the length of line if it monitored all joined channels on all connected networks, and you were connected to 4 networks with 10 channels each, and had 10 nicks per channel typing.. you'd end up with a line of 400 nicks, if each nick was 9 characters in length plus a character to separate the nicks.. you now have a line that is 4000 characters in length.

The closest mIRC feature is the "notify list". However, it will show you only the online/offline status of specific users (the info is sent by the server) because in IRC, there's no way to get a user's global idle time... despite whoissing. And mass-whoissing (or a periodic whois of every user of a large notify list) is a bad idea, regarding both network load and the risk to flood yourself off the server. It therefore can't become an in-build feature. You can try to script it though.
If you only want to visualize the active users per channel (and refuse to scroll), have a look at "Address book" > "Nick Colors". It allows to colour nicknames in the nicklist according to their channel-specific idle time.

Edit: Looks like I misconceived "typing" for "chatting somewhere else". Unveils my MSN experience. Nevermind... frown
