I'm having a really strange problem... I am able to connect to IRC servers but when I try to join a channel, nothing seems to happen. mirc just sort of hangs. The weird thing is, people actually see me join the channel from their end, but mirc just sits there like nothing has happened. I find I can get it to work by repeatedly reconnecting, after like 20 reconnects it finally joins channels. The same thing happens on every server. Has anyone seen this or know what might be causing it?

Thanks in advance,

twist

What version of mIRC, what server, are you using a BNC, and finally are you using any scripts or dlls?

what he describes in his problem is the exact same thing that happens to me.

i'm using v6.35, no BNC and i've tried reinstalling my registered version.

i connect to the server and then try joining a channel. no response on my screen but users in the channel say they can see me joining.

You haven't responded to the question regarding scripts.

I'm able to join channels on that server. If you manually /join #somechannel, does it work?

in mIRC type //echo -a $script(0) $dll(0) $version $os $md5($mircexe,2)

and copy the results here

You may also want to try typing /debug @debug before connecting and then seeing what shows up in the @debug window after connecting. If you actually joined the channel you should see a names list and a JOIN message from the server.

1) i have no scripts set up
2) manual join is same as auto-join. after typing /j #channel, it perceptibly does nothing - just sits there but users see me join.
3)//echo -a $script(0) $dll(0) $version $os $md5($mircexe,2) = 1 0 6.35 XP 2f63a83968f9586fe4fb48134253619c
4) debug output:

As suspected, the server is not sending back the JOIN reply that mIRC needs to actually join the channel. What's more interesting is that it seems you're somehow sending an invalid JOIN request in the server's eyes.

A valid join looks like:

-> firefly.no.eu.netgamers.org JOIN #randomchannel
<- :argv[0]!ident@hostname JOIN #randomchannel

Yours is:

-> firefly.no.eu.netgamers.org JOIN #ilovelamp password
<- :firefly.no.eu.netgamers.org 421 Deloitte #ilovelamp :Unknown command
<- :firefly.no.eu.netgamers.org 421 Deloitte OIN :Unknown command

mIRC is sending out the right command, so it's not at fault here. To be absolutely certain, try joining with /!join #somechannel (the exclamation mark included), and if that does not work, /raw join #somechannel

If both of those yield the same unknown command output in your debug log, this is something you need to take up with netgamers' server admins. Am I right in assuming this does not happen on other networks?

Try another network just to verify it only happens on that one, then.

I'm having this same exact problem. To answer the last question, it happens on all networks I connect to. I have also tried different clients (xchat on ubuntu) and get the same result. Mibbit however does work. This started when my internet went out of the day. Is it possible my ISP recently started blocking the irc port? (6667)

No, if IRC was blocked then you wouldn't be connected at all.

There are confirmed cases of some routers reading and selectively blocking IRC packets (technically not blocking, but same concept), so it's possible your routers are blocking a JOIN command for some reason.

Can you tell us your router model AND firmware version?
