I have turned the line marker off in options however it still displays.. Is there a way to force this off and.. what is the use of a line marker anyway? I have found no rhyme or reason to why or when a line marker is displayed?

Try using Ctrl+L. For a description of its use, lookup Line Marker in the help file...

from mirc.chm

Line marker
When you minimize a channel or query window, or make it inactive, the line marker shows you where new messages have arrived since you last looked in the window. This allows you to scroll back and easily see which messages you've missed. You can press Control+L to scroll back to view the line marker. The line marker is only updated after you've scrolled back to view it.

I have read the help file.. but for the no rhyme or reason aspect of it.. I have 3 windows open all with activity and then only 1 or 2 of them will have the line marker. This only began to happen when I downloaded and installed the latest version v6.31

I agree that the line marker shouldn't appear anywhere if it's disabled in the options dialog.

The problem with that, RoCk is that some people will have it disabled in options because they don't want it for every channel and then they'll use Ctrl-L to enable it in a single channel. If you couldn't do that, I'm sure it would upset a lot of people.

As far as anyone having issues with it, using Ctrl-L once in those channels should solve the issue if you have the option disabled. Chances are that you managed to hit Ctrl-L at some point. It can happen (I've done it in the past).

I was thinking the same thing, but I guess the same as the OP that it's weird that it just recently started happening so frequently. Possibly in the v6.31 update, something was changed that made the line marker behave this way. Similar with this report (same line of thinking, not similar issue), I thought it was something I was doing differently, but it wasn't and was fixed in v6.31.

The line marker is forcefully re-enabled in 6.31 even if it was off, just like the treebar. This was done to make people more aware of certain less-used features (I think)-- though I believe Khaled has said he won't force the treebar on in any future versions, this might go similarly for the line marker.

I mentioned in a post some time ago, probably concerning the treebar, that it's the microsoft way to enable absolutely everything by default to make sure the user knows that it's there.
