On trying to connect, I receive the message that it is unable to find firewall.

Mirc loads and it tries to connect but it keeps saying:

Connect retry (with a different ip) then the next line says:

Cannot find firewall.

Help please - this is frustrating.

It's an mIRC command to disable firewall support, in mIRC type /firewall off

Okay, thanks that worked.

Now I seem to need a registered nick and when I type in my name it says I'm not on a channel. ??????

To change your nick, use:

/nick yournick

If you need to register your nick, then you need to use the commands that network has for doing so. If it uses NickServ, then you usually do:

/msg nickserv register password e-mail

Then, you'll need to verify it by doing what the e-mail you receive says. And to identify, you'd use:

/identify password

Unless you are in a channel, or a pm (private message) with someone else, then anything you type in must be prefixed with the / character, so that mIRC knows that you are sending a command.

Without knowing the network, I would suggest you try
Code:
/msg nickserv help

If nickserv is on the network, then you will get a response with information regarding registering your nick.

Finally, the best place to get specific help for the network that you're on, is the network's help channel, normally #help

You should be able to join that channel by typing
Code:
/join #help
