I need to make characters a bit more bold, but not... 'bold'

You can choose another font from View > Font menu. Your question is rather odd though. You can also change the size of your current font to make letters a bit bigger (or a lot bigger if you wish).

You can't adjust the level of "bold", just like you can't in something like Word. It's either bold, or it isn't. A bold character is one that is an extra pixel wide (more for larger sized fonts). At size 12, you can't add only a half pixel extra width to make it halfway between bold and not bold. You can change the font or the font size or the font color, but you can't do increments of bold.

There are some fonts that are bolder by design, such as Arial Black. You can then apply the bold setting to make it bolder.
