I was wondering if anyone has ever asked via email about group registration/licensing of mIRC to Khaled Mardam-Bey?

I've already emailed him, but I don't expect an answer anytime soon, since I suspect he gets tons of email. However, I was curious to find out if anyone else had requested group registration and what pricing was offered.

My interest in group registration is for my small group of volunteer staff I have for an IRC channel that I operate. I feel that since they're volunteers, I don't expect them to pay for their IRC client. Also, I don't mind paying for registration of mIRC. I personally registered mIRC several years ago and find $20 to be a highly reasonable price for the use of mIRC.

I realize I could use my personal code to register another copy. However, I'm an honest person and feel that the author of mIRC has the right to the money from additional registrations under my use of the software.

Any info regarding group licensing of mIRC is appreciated.

Well hell I'm an op (volunteer staff) on a few channels, I should be reimbursed my $20? No wait, I'm an op .. erm volunteer on several channels, so I should be reimbursed $20 for each channel I volunteer on. Sounds good to me! smirk

Hehe, I don't know if the channel founders would do that for the channels you op in. That would be an interesting conversation to present to the founders. They'd probably think you're crazy.

I'm just interested in offering my staff a registered copy of mIRC. If you were staff in my channels, I wouldn't offer to reimburse you, but soon, if I get a group registration price, I'd offer a group registration code.

Since I prefer them using mIRC shareware (for using group scripts and other add-ons), I'm also offering to pay for it since I don't know if some can afford to pay for the registration. I'm personally on disability. Money can often be very tight for myself. However, some of my staff are also on tight budgets. If they choose to use mIRC over some freeware IRC clients I personally don't expect them to pay for it if they're going to be using it to op on my channels. I don't care if they use it elsewhere too but if they're helping me out, I want to help them out too.

I suppose I'm just a nice person and prefer to offer registered software to people who help me in my projects. It's the least I can do for my staff.

I haven't heard of anyone asking for group licensing, but I'm sure it's been asked at least once. I honestly don't know what Khaled would think about that. I do think it's very nice of you to offer to pay for their clients, though. It must be some important or useful channel rather than just a miscellaneous channel for you to do that.

Eh, well, it might become important. I actually have another channel that's opening that's tied to two other channels, one of which is one of those 'official' channels for a TV show. So, it's got potential to become something if I play my cards right.

So, if things go well, it might become important. However, if that happens, I'd like to have my staff be using mIRC. I can then make sure they have properly programmed menus and scripts to handle things. I can also then provide them with support if they're using mIRC. I've used other irc clients, but I simply like mIRC more.

I also like the forums here. I've found solutions to problems in the past by posting on these forums and I got very quick results. mIRC just works out better in general it seems. Quality IRC client and good support network of people.

If you require your staff to use certain tools to do their job then it is only right that their boss foots the bill. That said there is always scope for people to be offered a discount for bulk purchase though this doesn't always happen in the software industry. A new version of mIRC is seldom released these days so I doubt there will be bulk discounts offered for it. Call this a prediction more than gospel.

Sorry for the late reply. However, I was able to get a group licensing agreement with Khaled. I did have to purchase several licenses though. It turned out to be a nice opportunity I think and I'm now offering a legal registration to select people who need a valid mirc registration code.

I don't require people to use mIRC but it's the preferred IRC client on the channels I'm on. Also, I decided to close my own personal channel and now assist on another channel which I've helped on before. So, I extended my offer to fellow ops who didn't have a registered mIRC installation.

I must say, your honesty is pretty rare these days. I think if I were Khaled, I would've given you a great deal just for that. Most anyone else would've just gotten one license (or a keygen) and given it to all their friends.

I'm always honest, or try to be as much as possible. Also, I feel an application author should get what's rightfully due them financially. So, there was only one option in my situation, to honestly pay for the licenses I intended to use and offer my group of people. It's just the right and fair thing to do.

So far, it's been a good investment and well used by the people I have shared the group registration with. Knowing that Khaled agreed to the group license feels better too. If I need more I will be glad to pay for them again. That's just how I am. smile
