i am sure thatthis is a tired subject, and I'm sure that this will not ever be included in any update of mIRC but... I know that there is a script that displays emoticon IMAGES... where I can type ": )" in my editbox but it shows up inside of the caht window. I cannot find this script anywhere. i thought it was called smilesview or something. PELASE HJELP!@!!! lol or... please help rather. i would really appreciate it.

Hrrmm.. its not so much ascii art. It's a script, that posts images of the emoticon rather than the ascii of it... as though you were on a forum ": )" becomes on the forums, except in mIRC.

I don't believe you will ever see in mIRC, the 'images' like the IM programs have. IRC was meant to be a text chatting medium.

Some IRC java applets have avatars and pretty pictures. Some other IRC clients allow avatars, maybe mIRC might have that ability one day, we'll wait and see, ay.

I hope Karen's right. Some channels don't allow colours or coloured scripts, and personally, I quite agree. From what I've seen, it just gets annoying after a while, ending up being a free for all to see who has the best/flashiest stuff which just detracts and distracts from chatting. I personally think emoticons should be left to IM clients and forums, heheh

The reason I support a possible inclusion is because individual users are free to turn colours off if they wish. I have colour turned off so that my script's theme doesn't get scrambled by the collage of colour some users prefer. Remember that some channels are for kids and they'll always...
1. Use colour. 2. Probably use bold and underline with ASCII as well. 3. Abuse whoever tells them to stop having fun.
I'd prefer the colour to the abuse meself hehe.

The icon is not sent as an icon, it's sent as a text smiley as usual: a column followed by a closing parenthesis. This text is interpreted by the IRC client and displayed as a graphical icon.
Some other IRC clients do that, MSN does that too.
This would be a feature wich you can disable so that the smiley appears as a text smiley, or enable so that the smiley appears as a graphical icon. In any case, you would type it as usual (text) and it would be translatted upon receiving.

The Java applet I speak of doesn't interpret :-) as an emoticon, it has it's own control codes similar to colour/bold/reverse/underline.
In any case, the system used isn't relevant. As my later comment about colours explains, it should/can still be turned on or off, allowing those that have a complex with anything but B&W text to be satisfied.

Many clients are starting to support the imoticon thing, and those who don't want to see them can disable the interpretting and display of them. A little something for everyone.
I know Trillian, a do-it-all instant message/irc client does it, lots of java apps, etc. I figure mIRC will one day support it too, and I'm sure it will feature a config item to disable the display of them as graphics too =)

If mIRC does eventually support this, it would have to be with the option of turning them off...it'd drive me nuts otherwise!

Nah we have msn and all the sorts, but mIRC is just for plain no pics etc chatting. IRC will become way too laggy if that will start.

How does "[controlcode] SMILE [controlcode]" lag someone? It is just text. Exactly the same as typing ":-)"

I think you should just sent :-) or something, and it would be translated to an emoticon in mIRC. No hassle of typing wrong things and stuff But IF it will ever be in, i should be able to turn it off Maybe make a big smiley listing, where you can add and remove your own smilies, in the options dialog. A bit like the highlight thing
