when using any 6.x versions the application freezes at launch for a minute or two, then functions normally. under task manager the program shows no unusual activity in tersm of cpu or ram usage.

this problem happened for no apparent reason, just one day POOF and its slow.

when trying to use 5.91 the program launches perfectly but upon establishing a connection with any server crashes.
these are the details of the error report:

EventType : BEX P1 : P2 : 0.0.0.0 P3 : 00000000 P4 : wow32.dll
P5 : 5.1.2600.2180 P6 : 41107d48 P7 : 0002af3e P8 : c0000409

there were no hardware changes, like ive already said this problem happened completely randomly with no apparent (to me) reason. this still happens, months later after this post was made, with every fresh install of mirc - regardless of what version it is.
Even after any registry entries of filepaths that contained the word mirc have been obliderated i still get the problem

If you close down all other software, including anti-virus software, and then try to run mIRC, does the same problem still happen?

Yes the problem persists even if i shut down every windows service and taskkill explorer.exe along with any other program, and launch mirc from the commandline it still hangs.
I have recorded a video to better illustrate what happens, this is a fresh install of MIRC: http://media.putfile.com/MIRC-HANG

Normally when this issue is reported by a user, the cause is anti-virus software that incorrectly thinks that mIRC or mirc.ini may be part of a virus/trojan and freezes mIRC on startup and/or prevents mIRC from saving settings to mirc.ini.

Other than I can't think of a reason why this would happen. If you're sure you've shut down your anti-virus and/or other background software then I can only guess that something else on your system is involved in some way.

5.91 is 16-bit IIRC - it seems that your wow32.dll (the 16bit emulator) is having some problems.

It doesn't seem to be handling mIRC that well - apparently some 16bit calls aren't working out that well with windows...

Have you tried setting the compatibility mode on mIRC to Windows 95?
