The list of possible problems is almost infinite.

When you installed mIRC did you go with all of the default settings, or did you change some of them in order to maintain scripts, channels list, servers list, etc.?

Were there any problems encountered while downloading or installing mIRC?

What OS are you using? How much ram, available hard drive space?

Does mIRC show up in your task bar, as an icon by the clock display, both, or none of the above?

Let's get those questions answered, then see if we can narrow down the exact problem.

Since it's the first time on this comp that it was installed I sticked to the default options.

There were no problems during download or instalation as far as I could notice (no warning about it)

I use Windows XP Home sp2, got 12 G free space and a intel celeron M 1.30GHz processor

mIRC doesn't show up at all, it looks like nothing happens when I try to start it up.

ok, that's those eliminated. Next time you start mIRC (don't worry about the fact that you can't see it at this point), press CTRL+ALT+DEL (which will bring up your task manager), click the Processes tab and see if mIRC is running there. If it is, relay the CPU and Mem Usage numbers for mirc.exe You may need to adjust your display to get those numbers.

Sounds like the installation didn't take. I'm going to recommend that you download the installation program again (if you get a message indicating that the file already exists, overwrite it), then run the installation again from the newly downloaded file.
Aside from that, I'm afraid I'm at a loss.

Mahareth, you're not trying to run the program you downloaded after you do the installation, are you?

No, I'm not trying the instal file again when I try to start up (always put that in a special map where I only go if I need to install things)

I'll try again with a new download today.
