I think by now there are enough Windows XP users to justify proper user profile system intergration. Expecting users to have their configs, scripts and downloads in C:\Program Files was bad practice in the Windows 98 days, now its just an out-right security risk giving users write access in any Program Files sub-folder, and it limits individual user preferences in this multi-user age.
In my opinion only the mIRC.exe, help files, and DLLs should be in %ProgramFiles%\mIRC, and configs, scripts, and downloads should be directed to %profiledir%/mIRC or some such.

hmm...this, in theory, I think, would also allow multiple people to use the same installation of mIRC, since all the settings would be stored in the specific user profile.
I'm not sure if I'm for or against this suggestion at this point, so I'm just going to think it over and see what, if anything, anyone else has to say on it.

Personally, I'm the only user on my computer, so it wouldn't affect me either way. Maybe if it were an option during installation. Many programs have that option. "Install for all users/install for current user" or something to that effect.

Its more of a security orientated suggestion by taking advantage of NTFS's permissions system. It would also make mIRC installations easier to maintain for any net cafés as well as home setups in families. It's a standard way of doing things in multi-user enviroments (all current operating systems).
Another neat thing that could be done is a config dir commandline switch which would allow multipule instances of mIRC from the same installation but with different set of configs and scripts

That last one already exists, and after doing some further research, something similar to your first request already exists also.

... Russel, I only have one installation of mIRC - but this machine has four different [mIRC] user profiles - indeed I sometimes use three different profiles at the same time. See your post below on command line switches :-) However, I support this request - it would make using personalised settings a lot easier for multiple log-ons. Cheers, DK

I think it would be nice if mirc had this. It really is what's currently happening in other programs and while I wouldnt use it (am the only user of mirc here), I see the use FOR it.
Those who fail history are doomed to repeat it

Maybe, but that doesn't seperate user data from system logic. Having execute permissions in user folders is asking for trouble.

I think this might be a bit overexagerated for 99% of the home system setups, Though NTFS is the best thing for corperate multiuser solutions, it's advanced file and folder permisions are practicaly unused (as in modified by pc admin) on most pc's. That said it doesnt hurt having one bit at all and actually makes for a nice suggestion.

I think this might be a bit overexagerated for 99% of the home system setups... Not really, there's millions of home computers and millions of net nasties running about, home computer security is probibly more important than ever before. Corperations have security for data privicy and littigation pruposes. I personally don't like the idea of my computer being used as a puppet for kiddie tools, so I tend to take it a little more seriously than the average home user. At least this move will encourage safety a little more, they probibly wouldn't be aware of it, but its no harm.

it is possible in theroy to do this with creative use of batch files...you can instruct mirc to load config files from other locations...i guess it could be configured to run from a users directory....

Probibly could configure it yes, but I would like it to be default behaviour.

+1 for the use of %AppData% for user settings !! It's clean, it's simple, it's logical, it's not hackish ,... It's the way it should be . (even IE/MSN Messenger/... do it)
