Why is it illegal to connect to MSN via IRC? I was really confused when an op on dalnet told me this very fervently today.

I have seen scripts for years that do this on reputable mirc script websites.

Also Trillian, Miranda etc use protocols to connect, as does Yahelite etc, and have been for years...

are they all breaking the law? And if so why are they not shut down for doing so?

Miranda and Trillian connect to the MSN Messenger network, not MSN Chat. It says in MSN Chat's terms of service (or used to) that 3rd party clients are not allowed.
