Is there anyway you can stop people from identifying you in Big Bothr 6 chat room. Someone did something awful to me and they identify me everytime I come in to chat and they tell ppl not to chat with me.
I guess I broke some "etiquette rules:Then it got personal. I did not know about a few things and it just got blown out of proportion. I am housebound this summer and was so hoping that getting "superpass" for the first time would have made my summer a little easier. Any suggestions- and I would never have even known about Mirk if one of them hadn't slipped. Yup, they got my e mail. I realize now that they all know each other from past years etc. They sure got me-I am computer illiterate. They tell me they can get my e mail, Guid, my ISP, name (which they did) etc. Thank you for your time. Is this question even allowed on here? Thank you

Hi there, mIRC has nothing to do with Big Brother or Channel 4. It is a chat client that connects to Internet Relay Chat (IRC) with, on the most part, an entirely separate community to those that gather on the BB chatrooms. In fact, I would imagine many people that use this forum have no idea what Channel 4 is, or that a series of Big Brother is currently going on in the UK (as IRC is global, many people on IRC and these boards come from all over the world). It is probable people harassing you use IRC (and therefore, most likely use mIRC), however, we at these boards know nothing about it! mIRC is just software that connects to IRC and has no control over which people use, or what they do on IRC. For help with harassment on the Big Brother chat rooms, contact the admins/moderators of that chat room, from what I've read there should always be one. Try looking for some sort of block/ignore feature too. By the way, Derek to win Regards,
Mentality/Chris

hello,
personally i'm sorry to hear about your irc experiences... and sometimes, learning the ropes can be tough. the other users in that chat room should be receptive to newcomers and assist where needed. if you had indeed broke some "etiquette rules" it was the responsibilty of the more senior users and the ops of that channel to inform/correct and or direct you to the channel rules (if, there are any) for review. however, it appears that infact they themselves are breaking MANY general "etiquette rules" as welll as harrasment policies some networks have...
there are a couple things you may do, to try and resolve this.. the first thing i would do is take your name out of mirc.. i know mirc asks you for this information name (first and last) and your email address.. for this information gets display when they try to get info from you by doing what is called a whoison you. which gives some other info as well. to do this follow the following steps:
1.) with mirc running, click on tools at the top of the mirc screen. 2.) next click on options, it should bring you to a "tree" looking list. 3.) what your looking for is where it says connect, click on it so you see the screen that holds your name and other stuff..
now after your there you can change this info. i think mirc needs something there, in those boxes to complete it's operations. just change those to w/e that isn't your real info.. in addition you may also choose to select the invisable option that is also on this page . what this does is prevent other users in the channel from seeing you in their users list(makes you invisible). after you've made your changes click on the ok button till your back at the main mirc screen.
the reason they would know your isp is thatmost email addresses have the isp name somewhere in your ip adress which is visible when someone does a whois on you, that you can't avoid unfortunatly.
another think you can do is change your nick identity by either changing it from the screen i directed you to, or by using the following command in the main screen in mirc: /nick <your new nick here> ( this command will change your old nick to your new nick.
and also i would definatly tell the channel ops! most decent ops will address the problem right away. those are the people whom run the channel, they can be identified by the @ symble in front of their nicks.
i hope this response helps you out some. and good luck!
EDIT: disreguard the portions about mirc unless thats the medium your using to connect to irc.. (besides it's a better program!)

Thank you so much. While I was waiting for an answer, I read a post by "Dean" and that is what they were doing to me.
The made it look like I was posting things and I wasn't. I later found out they were doing something like /me and my nick and then a msg or something like that. When I tried it, it didn't work and then they sid "now try it" and it worked as if they had some control over my ability to use or not use Mirc.
They are aware of channel 4 and the fact that it is going on in the UK and Australiia as well, which I get free.(with my superpass). I wish I knew how to use block-but I don't, I only just learned how to chg my nickname. Thank you for time. I appreciate it. I would like to download Mirc but I am worried about viruses. I am so worried that I bought a new computer 6 mos to download music and have yet to download one song. Thank you also for telling the diff. between irc and Mirc.

I don't know if I am using mirc or irc. I tried to make myself invisible by clicking on options. I do not have that capability. The only ability I have is to put commands in the place where I type.
They let me know in an e mail that thye would phone me and then the phone rang and I did not answer it-it was anonymous.
Everytime I change my nick, they announce to everyone who it really is. I have no privacy. If you could tell me the exact command for block or invisible I will try that. And thank you for your explanation. I understood it.

Sounds to me like you're using a website's Java applet to access IRC. Those can be written to allow people to control what you are doing. You would be better off downloading mIRC from here and installing/running it.

If you feel your onlline harassment is extreme (where phone calls are concerned, it is considered extreme), you need to contact your local law enforcement. Advice can be found at the Cyberangels website. If you're using Channel 4's webchat, then we can't really help you, this is an mIRC forum, and it has its own moderators. Regards,

I would suggest you download mirc, becuase it dont sound like your running it to me. Its pretty hard not to know you are running it, the program name comes up at the top. Well anyway, i would downlaod mirc, and just say bye bye to the idots in that room, sounds like they found there little corner of cyberspace and think its the place of all places and they must protect there little world from all comers. Well well tell ya irc and Mirc getting you on irc lets you find a million new places to chat, most wont be mean to you, well UNLESS YOU TYPE LIKE THIS ALL THE TIME. thats like just real annoying.
