Why is the above topic locked and stickied with just 1 positive reply?

I just downloaded mIRC after a 4 yr break. Now the guy who made it wants cash for it. Shock. Now this is nothing new, it's understandable.

But,..

It's not SHAREWARE once you charge $20 for it.
It's not *THE SPIRIT OF THE INTERNET* once you charge $20 for it.

The guy builds a program, it becomes popular, it suddenly has millions of users, and he decides to make money off it. This is all ok, but let's skip the *this is shareware, and we're maintaining the true spirit of the internet* bs. Once you sell out, you sell out.

Let's call the spade for a spade shall we?
I never liked the guy's face on the intro-screen, and I won't pay for the program once my 30 days are up.

Now let's see how long it goes before this post is removed.. hehe.

D.

Why would it be removed? Your entitled to your opinon. Your also entitled to not pay for it, still receive a working program, or use something else. *shrug*

mIRC has always been shareware. The only difference with four years ago is the about box at startup. If you didn't even know that you had to pay for mIRC back then, then I'd say the about box at startup is quite justified.

Yes it is. Please look up the definition of "shareware".

You got the order of events wrong; see above. And as you have undoubtedly read in the sticky post, mIRC is how Khaled makes a living. Is making a living by writing and selling a program "selling out" in your book?

Remember, noone is forcing you to use mIRC. If I understand correctly how you interpret "the spirit of the internet", you're much better off using one of the many Free IRC clients, instead of whining here.

It wouldn't be shareware if Khaled forced you to pay the $20 for it before letting you be able to run the program on your computer. But you can run mIRC on your computer for a full 30 days before you are required to pay for it. If you weren't required to pay for it, then it would be FREEWARE not SHAREWARE.

STAREWARE aka Windows... Where you pay an exorbinant fee for a program, run it, find it works for 30 - 90 days, then discover a problem with it, e-mail the company, and stare at the program, or your inbox waiting for a reply.

LOL

In honesty, this is the first time I've come across that term, so I don't know.

{Sorry for the topic bump!}
...In my opinion, mIRC is Shareware. You get to use it for free for 30 days, and even after the 30 days are up you can still use it. It isn't disabled, as some companies make their programs. Way back when, I thought it was optional to pay $20 for the program. That was when I was 11. I still did.. BEFORE the 30 days was up. To this day I like and use mIRC.

You're thinking that Freeware is Shareware. From what I understand, there are quite a few sites that get these two terms confused. In freeware, you never have to pay for the program or game, such as B.Y.O.N.D., Wulfram 2, or CyberStrike II. In CyberStrike II, a freeware account is called a "shareware" account, even though it technically isn't "shareware."

Now, games like Collapse Deluxe or Zuma which you download and play for a trial time period are shareware. You get a trial version of the game, level up a little to see how you like the game, and have to pay something around $20-$30 for a full, licensed copy. These programs either don't go any higher than those levels, leave out many features, or disable themselves after 30 days or so. mIRC doesn't do that, but you ARE asked to pay for the program after 30 days.

$20 isn't that unreasonable, either - ESPECIALLY since it's all Khaled is asking in order to make a living.

Just figured I'd comment here...

Don't forget that Khaled also donates the money he receives from mIRC registrations...

When he donates registration money to groups, the information about the group and their name is always on the main Mirc Page
