I recall once coming across a certain IRC message that broke my theme. It had something to do with SOUND if I remember properly, and generated some text that looked about like this:

* nick <sound>

I'm not sure if this has been dropped in later versions, but on examining the contents of mirc.exe, I spotted something in a group of ctcp-related strings like so:

<other stuff> <a few nuls> SOUND <a few nuls> * %s %s <a few nuls> <more stuff>

This looks exactly like what I am trying to remember.

The problem is, a CTCP sound does not generate this message (I've tested on mirc 5.91 and 6.16, with or without filenames, to channels). Instead you just see [nick SOUND].

Can anyone recall what circumstances exactly this message was generated under?

/help /sound
read the last sentence, it's probably what you're looking for.

You have answered my dilemma wink I never thought to try it with parameters *after* the filename. Interestingly enough it doesn't seem to break theme now, so maybe it was just mishandled ctcps or something before. Thank you.
