Hello, well my fellow people, I am in search of an application that I can use to host as a IRC Server. My current location is Auckland, New Zealand. I do not expect a large amount of traffic (more or less) want it for a product that can be provided to my customers, as well as personal use by myself.

Any help would be much apreciated, Thanks.

DALnet's IRCd
IRCnet's IRCd
UnderNet's IRCd
EFnet's IRCd
UnrealIRCd
UltimateIRCd
And more.

They're all free, but you have to have access to an unix/linux box to run them on.
If you want for windows, go to wircds.net, but it's not recommended to run IRCd on win32 machine

Why not? I know Windows based networks that have the same reliability as any network out there.

My point exactly:

The only thing Unix will have in it's favour is if a user wants to use a shell account to host his IRCd. But then again there is server co-location options too which could make Windows possible.

Can a Windows-based server handle 50K+ local clients connecting?

Don't get me wrong. I'm definitely pro-Windows. I've just never had much luck getting a Windows-based server to not lock up when more than about 1-2K clients connect to it.

It would depend on the IRCd quality and the licence agreement I suppose. CR, for example, allows 10,000 per licence and is known to support that when a proper enterprise grade server is used (Compaq Proliant, etc). If that restriction was lifted I have no doubt at all that it could support 50,000.

The only thing that would bother me is being able to afford to support the bandwidth required for 50,000 chatters, which would probably cost more than the hardware/software.

Without getting down to a full appraisal of all IRCd's out there I will just simply say this much - If I had the money and/or the means to recuperate it, which I do and I had the choice of CR on a co-located server or a freeware on a Windows server or shell account I would take the former any day of the week.

Take a look at ICQ Chat and the endless services crashes and the IRC servers themselves need to be rebooted on a routine basis. Would you want that level of reliability if you were running a commercial service that needed to at the very least get a return on costs?
