Just wondering - how exactly does that fit into a mIRC bug report forum? :P

You can use several resources found in this thread, make sure you use 2-3. Read up about firewalls too, and make sure you have all the latest Windows Updates from www.windowsupdate.com to help ensure security.

To pick up on what greeny said though, this entire board is mIRC-related, we can't and (generally) don't deal with viruses, we can't guarantee that the information you get will not break your computer, so it's best to leave it to the big companies who specialise in that topic.

Stay safe smile

That has to be close to the worst advice I've ever seen.
How are people supposed to avoid getting into the same
situation in the future if not educated on how these things
work, what to look for in symptoms, how to avoid it ..
maybe even how to remove it? There would be a lot less
headaches in this area if people would just take a little bit
of time to try and learn these things. Instead of running to
someone and saying Please fix it, maybe try researching
it and finding out why this is happening to them. When/If
they still have to go to someone else, ask questions to learn
from them. Much too often I have people bring me their
machine thinking it needs replaced, it must just be getting
old
.. because they have no clue. Then when I get it
running smoothly for them again and explain to them what
the problems were, it always seems to make them happy
that they didn't have to replace anything .. although they
always still manage to complain about my bill. wink

Have you even read the thread I linked to? It links to many resources that can be used to further educate yourself on Internet security, it has information on Firewalls, what they are, why you need them and I think the possible symptoms, and how you can be infected. I also mentioned updating Windows with Windows Update.

What I meant (re: your quote) is that it's best to leave the big companies to make programs poke around your machine, not for you to go poking around the registry or Windows settings and possibly breaking something from the advice given by someone who chooses to help here. We have no idea whether the person giving help knows what they are talking about, or whether they recognize the fact that not everyone is as computer literate as themselves. Whilst in an ideal utopian world everyone would be a computer expert and could sort out their virus issues, or in fact never have virus issues in the first place, that is not the way things work and we cannot expect people to learn all about Windows Registry and other quite advanced issues to sort out one trojan. We can however educate them on how to keep safe in future, which is what I did by linking to a thread that contains said info. No point reiterating it for every post, that's why the sticky was made in the first place.

lol .. yeah I could have 'free day' .. that would be the busiest
day ever. Most seem to complain when the bill is about
25% or more of what they originally paid for their $499 HP
or Dell or <insert any generic name here>. smile

Then you must charge to much for what they get in return.

What would be the average price of your bill as a percentage of say a new generic Dell pc.

I charge $25 per hour and round it to the next hour.
Very resonable in this area considering most people charge
at least double that and could have the machine for a couple
of weeks or longer. My turnaround is usually under 48 hours,
sometimes longer but not often. Also most places charge
their hourly rate from the time they put the machine on the
bench until they are finished with it, like maybe starting a
hdd scan and leaving it to go have lunch or work on another
machine, I do not, I only charge for time I actually spend
working on the machine. My bill is usually very low .. depending
on what needs done. If someone brings me a machine
because their kid was surfing for porn and now it's slowed
to a crawl .. chances are there will be more time into it.

I asked for an average price, not a detailed description of your working life, I would have to gather from you giving me that instead, that you dont know what one is. A lot of clients want an estimated price even if they sometimes are going to get charged well more. From my experence it is always best to tell them, An average price for a job of this nature is $xxx. They then knwoning that thats an average can deal with a bill twice as much, To many people say, Oh i dont charge as much as everyone else, and then thier bill comes in and Wow look its just like everyone elses, but OH this job had sooooo much stuff to do, Honestly! hah yeah right!.

Obviously from the way you talk, you are the one that has no
clue .. I don't know of any business that will give any kind of
an estimate based solely upon the customers description of
the problem (except maybe yours). If they are given an
average or estimated cost based on their description, they
will expect the bill to be about the same, and if I were to hand
them a bill that was twice the amount I estimated, they would
think I was ripping them off. Go get yourself a clue.

This is a bug report thread, let's end this unrelated discussion now before it goes too far.

Well im going to leave it at this reply becuase IMO you are clearly showing you just want a flame war, my statement about you not knowing what a average quote is, was not directed at you as "you dont know what an average is" but rather like alot of companies out there , they dont keep or track any form of marketing data on themselfs, so they cant give an average cost per job type.
Now to address your points. Companies al over the world give estimates based solely on verbal descriptions, not many give quotes.
An average price for a job is not an estimate for the job, but rather a guide to the customer on likely costs involved.
Very few expect the bill to be the same unless there fooled (normally by the service provider) into thinking thats a likely cost, rather than an average cost.
What you estimate and then bill isnt really relevent since that isnt what I said.
I would be happy to get some extra clues, I would place them with all the ones I have already, and evaluate them for there validility.

One thing I think I may have overlooked here is the type of customers you vs I deal with, mine are exclusively bussiness, we dont deal with general public, so maybe considering how stupid the majority of home users appear to be about there pc's I can see there just as stupid about the price of the bill.

You said it right there .. the average home user today
knows about as much (or is that little?) about their pc
as the average housewife knows about cars, just about
enough to drive it and get into accidents. Sorry, no flame
war intended, seems maybe it was a missunderstanding
on my end.
