It would be cool if mIRC could have some kind of inbuild antivirus, nothing big, but just a litle program that would check for the most commen known backdoor viras.
Maybe if you could have some antivirus company to make a litle app/"plugin", for mIRC with it.

Whats wrong with supporting companies like Norton and McAffee? >:F

Not a bad idea but you then need someone to make updates for it each day.

Nothing at all - but MacAfee and Norton often miss backdoors and trojans. It wouldn't hurt to have something specifically designed to detect them built in to mIRC. Of course, this would run in conjuction with your usual AV prog.

And yet again, Norton and McAfee get to virus definitions faster than any built-in detection could ever resolve them.. It all a matter of updating definitions..

Agreed, but if their latest definitions don't include the latest irc trojans, it's a moot point. In addition to Norton2003, I also run this free online scanner regularly. Not that I'm paranoid or anything, lol

I myself also scan with norton, and have enjoyed it. although, I do have a cousin that prfers to run "botnets" (the basis of the mirc trojans) and I get ahead of the virus alerts. He notifies me of the infection process, as well as how to detect if you are infected. In most cases, blocking the virii on your computer is as simple as setting a password to your "Administrator" account on your computer. They all use a form of the net.exe exploit, and ipc$ hack. "Execut arbitrary code" as is said my Microsoft. >:D

In theory that sounds good, but from a practical standpoint...
Someone would have to be keeping up to date with all the trojans/virii (which at the rate those things pop up would take a lot of ppl 24/7) and do the update definitions and solutions. Not to mention program it and deal with questions/probs. Khaled would have to find and hire ppl qualified to do that and set them up to do it. (which would no doubt be the end of $20 for mIRC) Even keeping up with "the most common" would be a challenge. Then of course ppl would have to actually download updates.

What would make me leary is that if it included only old or recent "most common" many ppl mite think that was all they really had to worry about. I'm having a hard time believing the ppl who dont take advantage of all the available virus resources would do any better if mIRC had one.

There is also the potential for whatever was in mIRC to be in conflict with whatever else a user had, or worse, for them to feel thats all they needed.

There are so many software and online resources for virus detection/information/defense done by ppl who are well qualified for the work. I'm VERY pro-virus scanning, but im inclined to say leave virus detection to the ppl/companies/websites that specialize in it, have the needed resources/knowledge and are quite good at it. Let Khaled concentrate on what he is so outstanding at: developing mIRC.

If you are aware that your cousin has and is committing a felony, why haven't you reported it to the police? In some countries that makes you a criminal as well...

Also the methods you listed there are used by a VERY small number of trojans, and not only that, botnets are also a small percentage of trojans. Maybe you shouldn't be getting advice on how to protect yourself from a felon.

The way I see it, if your not intelligent enough to download the patch from microsoft that resolves the net.exe exploit, you deserv to leanr from your mistakes. Anyways, it not my responsibilty to babysit him...

no one told u that it was your job to babysit him ... but that u knowly allow him to do soemthign ILLEGAL ( as u seem to be an expert on) u are infact breaking a law ...... as for intelligence ..... i personally dont think your allowed to guage someone elses

So if you saw someone murder a man, you wouldn't tell the police because it's "not your job to babysit." That is a crime. It's called abstruction of justice. You know someone is committing a crime yet you fail to report it. Yes that definately something you should come to the forums and brag about...

I use the enterprise version of eTrust. There is far fewer cases of false positives and, in my view, faster response times to new virii. The catch: You pay more for it, but that is generally how the system works for everything.

I still think that a virus/trojan detector built into mIRC is pushing sh*t uphill (an Aussie way of saying 'waste of time'). This is because:

1. Someone has to keep the updates coming along. Does Khaled have the time or the resources? Probably not.

2. Many trojans that affect mIRC are mere mIRC scripts which are either CTCP backdoors or socket bots and hence are legitimate code even if the purpose is less than desirable. This means that either some trojans will never get found or you will have mIRC deleting bona-fide mIRC scripts all the time.

In short, I say leave it to the AV companies.

what's the point of having anti virus programs for mIRC? There are many stuff that does the job. And making a virus program will require extra $$ for updating as what other people says, mIRC ==> chat client, not av program.

I still suggest what I suggested a long time ago. Let mIRC do like the numerous IM clients do. Integrate with AV software. AIM, YIM, MSN, etc they all perfectly integrate with Norton. If I d/l a file, Norton auto scans it as soon as it downloads. I really don't see how something like that could be bad for mIRC...
