If the help file documents the usage of the -a switch when used with an alias of our own, it does not describe what operations are done on the file if we don't pass our own alias, what kind of sort is made?

The /filter command performs no sorting itself if none of the sort options are specified. However, if you are sorting into an item, such as a listbox or window, that has its own sort settings, then it may sort them itself. You will need to try it out to see how these features interact.

Which 'own sort' do these item have? Are you talking about /window -s and -S? If so, I'm not really following because these sort options are applied whenever a line is added.

Ok, so all of these (window -sS and custom dialog listbox/combo) sort their content when content is added. This to me, means that sorting again is never going to change the content. If this is true, filter -a without a parameter is not doing anything
