For example, some channels (also known as rooms) require you to have a registered nick in order to join. If this is the case, you would've gotten a message like "Registered nick required (+R)" Other channels are moderated (+m) which means that you need a voice (+v) in the channel. This mode can only be granted by ops in the channel.
